TV-Series
Description
Asebi is the second daughter of the Eastern House and one of the four noblewomen sent to the Cherry Blossom Palace to compete in the Rite of Ascension for the hand of Crown Prince Wakamiya. Her very name, given to her by the Empress, is a pointed insult; Asebi refers to a plant that intoxicates horses, implying she is a beautiful but dangerous lure meant to make the prince lose his senses.
Physically, Asebi is depicted as an adolescent girl with brown eyes and shoulder-length brown hair. Upon her arrival at court, she presents a facade of innocence, kindness, and naivety, appearing to be a simple, well-mannered, and somewhat airheaded young woman who is utterly oblivious to the complex political intrigues surrounding her. This initial portrayal makes her seem out of place among the more cunning competitors.
However, this innocent persona is later revealed to be a meticulous mask for a profoundly manipulative and remorseless sociopath. Asebi is a sublimely calculating individual with no concern for the welfare of those she considers beneath her, which includes nearly everyone. She demonstrates a chilling lack of guilt or any sense of wrongdoing for the severe consequences of her schemes, which include the deaths of others. Her motivation stems from a desire to secure power and win the consort competition, and she is driven by a cocky self-assurance that she can manipulate Prince Wakamiya as easily as she has manipulated others. She orchestrates a deadly plot involving her attendant, Fujinami, exploiting Fujinami's loneliness and devotion to eliminate a potential witness and sabotage a rival, all while keeping her own hands clean and leaving behind only circumstantial evidence. Her shock when the prince openly declares his loathing for her reveals how disconnected she is from the reality of her own malice.
In the story's first half, Asebi is used as a narrative tool to introduce the audience to the world of Yamauchi and its courtly rituals, as her feigned ignorance allows other characters to explain the setting. Her primary role is as an antagonist and a rival candidate for the prince. Her key relationship is with Fujinami, the chief of the Wisteria Guard and the prince's sister, whom she manipulates into committing murder to protect Asebi's schemes. Asebi also shares a significant relationship of deep mutual loathing with Prince Wakamiya, who sees through her facade and is a primary target of her manipulation. Her development is one of dramatic revelation, as her true sociopathic nature is exposed in a public confrontation, shattering the kind and innocent image she so carefully cultivated. No notable abilities beyond her masterful skills of manipulation and psychological control are detailed.
