Movie
Description
Momiji Ōoka is a seventeen-year-old second-year student at Kyoto Senshin High School. She comes from the Ōoka family, one of the most prominent and wealthy conglomerates in the Kansai region, and her grandfather is a former Prime Minister of Japan. This background places her among the upper echelons of society, comparable only to the Suzuki and Karasuma families in terms of influence and wealth. She is attended by a personal butler, Muga Iori, a former公安 police officer who serves her with unwavering loyalty.
In terms of personality, Momiji is outwardly elegant, polite, and girlish, taking great care in her appearance with stylish clothing, pierced ears, and intricately painted nails. She is considered very beautiful, with wavy ash-blond hair and a slender frame. Beneath this refined exterior, she is sharp-witted, observant, and a highly capable detective in her own right. She has demonstrated the ability to solve cases by picking up on subtle clues that even seasoned detectives miss, such as deducing a trick solely from a sound she heard during a phone call with her butler. Her deductive skill is acknowledged by those around her, and she regularly engages in detective work. However, she also displays a possessive and competitive side, particularly regarding her romantic feelings.
Momiji's primary motivation is her belief that Heiji Hattori is her future husband. She and Heiji met as children during a Hyakunin Isshu karuta tournament, where Heiji defeated her. In that moment, she misheard his words of encouragement—"I'll be even stronger"—as a marriage proposal. This misunderstanding has fueled a deep and unwavering infatuation. Consequently, she views Kazuha Toyama as her romantic rival, often addressing her dismissively as "Leaf girl" and actively trying to disrupt Heiji and Kazuha's relationship. Her actions are driven by a genuine, if misguided, affection and a determination to fulfill what she believes is a promise.
In the story of The Million-dollar Pentagram, Momiji plays a supporting but active role. Aware that Heiji is in Hakodate, Hokkaido, to participate in a kendo tournament and, more importantly, to find the perfect spot to confess his feelings to Kazuha, Momiji travels there by helicopter with Iori. Her goal is to thwart Heiji's confession. Throughout the film, she and Iori are shown scouting romantic locations, planning to interfere at the decisive moment. She does not directly meet Heiji face-to-face in the film, but her presence creates a looming obstacle to his plans. She also contributes to the mystery by providing a crucial hint that helps Heiji decipher a code related to the treasure, demonstrating her intelligence even while pursuing her personal agenda.
Her key relationships define her character. With Heiji Hattori, she is a persistent admirer who calls him "my future husband," though Heiji does not reciprocate her romantic feelings and sees her merely as a friend or acquaintance. With Kazuha Toyama, she is a direct rival, and their interactions are marked by tension and competition. Her most significant relationship is with her butler, Muga Iori. Iori is completely devoted to her, having resigned from the公安 police to serve her. He supports her schemes, handles logistics, and protects her, while also offering a voice of reason. They share a strong bond of trust, and he respects her intelligence and judgment. She is also revealed to be a classmate of Soshi Okita, the kendo prodigy, who sometimes refers to her by a blunt nickname.
Momiji's character has shown some development over time. While she remains determined to win Heiji's affection, she has also exhibited moments of self-awareness and vulnerability. After Heiji successfully confessed to Kazuha in a later story arc, Momiji, far away in Shiga Prefecture, was shown crying, sensing she had lost something important despite her own victory in a karuta tournament. This suggests a capacity for genuine emotional pain and growth beyond her initial one-dimensional rivalry. Her role has expanded from a simple love rival to a recurring ally in solving cases, proving her value as more than just a comic obstacle.
Momiji possesses several notable abilities. She is a national high school champion of competitive Hyakunin Isshu karuta, often called the heir apparent to the next Queen of Karuta. This requires exceptional memory, reflexes, and concentration. She is also an astute detective with keen hearing and observation skills, capable of reaching accurate deductions with minimal information. Her high social standing gives her access to resources and influence, including the ability to sponsor events and move in powerful circles. While not a physical fighter, she is resourceful and not afraid to put herself in harm's way to protect others, as seen when she once attempted to shield Kazuha during a hostage situation.
