Description
Meme Kakure is a main character and the eleventh girlfriend of Rentarou Aijou in the anime and manga series 100 Girlfriends. She is a first-year student in class four at Ohananomitsu High School, sharing the same class as Rentarou and several of the other girlfriends. Her birthday is October 10th.

In terms of appearance, Meme has dark, waist-length hair that she wears with long, straight-cut bangs that completely cover her eyes. This hairstyle is a deliberate choice, as she is extremely shy and uses her bangs to shield her face from view. She also has a notable mole near her mouth and another beneath her left ear. Despite having a very attractive face and a full figure, she actively tries to conceal these traits. She wears a modest turtleneck under her school blazer, dark pantyhose, and a minimizing bra specifically to downplay the size of her chest, which is one of the largest among the girlfriends. Her overall fashion sense is低调 and monochromatic, favoring black, white, and grey to help her blend into the background.

Meme's personality is defined by her intense shyness and her desire to live without drawing any attention to herself. She is so self-conscious that she considers even ordinary social interactions, like having a conversation or holding hands, to be impossibly embarrassing. Her ultimate wish is to be an unremarkable background character, or "mob character," and she feels that her own beauty is a burden because it makes her stand out. To avoid the scrutiny of others, she has tried various methods of hiding, including wearing masks, but found that her long bangs were the most effective. Despite her reclusive nature, Meme is a kind and gentle person who expresses her affection for others through thoughtful, tangible actions.

Meme's primary motivation is to find a way to connect with people without experiencing overwhelming embarrassment. She deeply desires love and friendship but is convinced that her pathological shyness makes a normal relationship impossible. This internal conflict is the central challenge of her character. When she meets Rentarou, she is drawn to him but is also terrified by the intimacy his attention represents. Her journey is about slowly learning to accept affection and to stay present in social situations instead of fleeing from them.

Meme's role in the story begins when she is introduced as Rentarou's soulmate. Their first meeting occurs after a gust of wind blows a sign toward her. Rentarou pushes her to safety, but in the process, her bangs are swept away, and their eyes meet for the first time, triggering the soulmate shock. Overcome with shame at having her face seen, she runs away, leaving behind a small knitted doll. The next day, she leaves a knitted doll of Pentarou (a small mascot character) and a thank-you note in Rentarou's locker. Rentarou's persistent and gentle efforts to speak with her eventually lead to her confession of love, which she immediately follows by running away again. He finally catches up to her and makes a heartfelt promise that he will always find her, no matter where she hides, which reassures her enough to accept the relationship.

Several key relationships help shape her experience. Her bond with Rentarou is the most significant, as his unwavering acceptance and determination to seek her out provide her with a safe space to slowly overcome her fears. Among the other girlfriends, she develops a particularly close friendship with Mimimi Utsukushisugi. Mimimi, who is proud of her own beauty and strives to be the center of attention, acts as a kind of protector and mentor for Meme. After helping Meme avoid some persistent journalists, the two become frequent companions, with Mimimi often praising Meme's hidden beauty and helping her gain confidence. She also shares quieter moments with Shizuka Yoshimoto, bonding over their love for calm activities and handmade crafts.

Over the course of the series, Meme shows gradual but noticeable development. While she still defaults to hiding when flustered, she becomes better at interacting with the large and boisterous family of girlfriends. Her first major test is learning to be in a group without constantly disappearing. One of her notable acts of development is creating a knitted doll for each of the first ten girlfriends as a way of introducing herself and showing her care for them. This thoughtful gesture demonstrates her willingness to connect, even if it is through her craft rather than direct conversation.

Meme possesses two notable abilities. The first is her skill at knitting. She spends a great deal of time creating intricate, small stuffed animals and handmade clothing. These knitted creations are not just a hobby but also a form of communication and affection.

The second and most remarkable ability is her "Misdirection" technique, which borders on a superpower. When Meme becomes extremely embarrassed, she instinctively throws one of her knitted dolls in a certain direction to draw the attention of anyone watching. In the split second that their focus is diverted, she is able to completely vanish from her location, leaving the doll in her place. This disappearance is so swift and effective that other characters often mistake it for teleportation or a ghostly phenomenon. She can also use this skill to contort her body and escape from restraints, further cementing its almost supernatural effectiveness. This technique is a physical manifestation of her shyness, allowing her to literally flee from any situation that causes her too much emotional distress.
