Description
The Love God is a supporting character in the anime and manga series The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You. He is a divine being who presides over the Matchmaking Like Crazy Shrine and is responsible for assigning soulmates to humans at birth. His physical appearance is that of an elderly bald man with a long white beard, a halo floating above his head, and small wings on his back, and he wears traditional Japanese robes. Despite his godly status, the Love God does not possess a particularly serious or solemn demeanor. He is easily distracted and prone to making casual mistakes, as demonstrated when he accidentally assigned the protagonist Rentarou Aijou one hundred soulmates instead of the standard single soulmate. The reason for this error was that he became distracted by the television airing the film Castle in the Sky at the moment he was inputting Rentarou's fate. The Love God's motivation and role in the story are primarily that of an instigator and occasional guide. When Rentarou visits the shrine and prays for a girlfriend after a lifetime of romantic rejections, the Love God appears and reveals the mistake, explaining that Rentarou is now destined to meet one hundred soulmates by the end of high school. He further warns that if Rentarou rejects any of these soulmates, they will be cursed with fatal misfortune or death. This warning sets the central premise of the series in motion, forcing Rentarou to choose to love and date all one hundred soulmates simultaneously in order to save their lives. The Love God does not actively participate in Rentarou's daily life or romantic endeavors, but he reappears at various points in the story to provide exposition, clarify the rules of the soulmate system, or react to the chaotic consequences of his original error. His key relationships are limited primarily to Rentarou Aijou, as he acts as the divine authority who both caused and occasionally explains the unusual situation Rentarou finds himself in. He does not interact directly with Rentarou's girlfriends in a sustained manner, though his divine rules directly affect all of them. The Love God exhibits minimal character development over the course of the series. He retains his easygoing, somewhat irresponsible nature throughout, and he does not undergo any personal growth or change in motivation. His role remains that of a background divine figure who set the story in motion and occasionally reminds the cast of the stakes involved. In terms of notable abilities, the Love God possesses a range of typical divine powers. He has the authority to assign the number of soulmates to individuals at birth, he can alter or create fate on a grand scale, and he is able to physically move through solid objects such as shrine altars. He can appear and disappear at will, usually manifesting before Rentarou only when the plot requires an explanation or a reminder of the original rules. Despite these powers, his casual attitude and tendency toward distraction suggest that he does not exercise his divine authority with great diligence or care.
