Description
Kashu Kiyomitsu is an uchigatana, a type of sword, who has manifested as a tsukumogami, a spirit that takes on a human form after centuries of existence. His historical origins lie in a humble and difficult environment; his swordsmith was a craftsperson living in the slums by a riverbank, a marginalized group in Edo-era Japan. This background deeply influences his character. Forged in the mid-Edo period, he is perhaps best known for being one of the blades wielded by Okita Souji, a prodigious swordsman of the Shinsengumi in the Bakumatsu era. It was during the Battle of Ikedaya that Kashu Kiyomitsu was broken at the tip and, being beyond repair, was ultimately discarded by his beloved master.

This history of rejection is the core of Kashu Kiyomitsu's personality. On the surface, he presents himself as confident, vain, and somewhat demanding of attention, declaring himself a difficult sword to handle but with top-notch abilities. He has an intense focus on his appearance, adorning himself with cosmetics and always painting his nails in a fashionable way. This obsession with being pretty, however, is a direct mask for profound insecurity. He believes that by maintaining a clean and beautiful exterior, he can ensure he is loved and never abandoned again. His greatest fear is being unwanted and thrown away, a trauma stemming directly from his final moments with Okita Souji. He constantly seeks affection and praise from his current master to soothe this deep-seated fear of worthlessness.

In the story of Touken Ranbu Kai Kyoden, Kashu Kiyomitsu serves as a Sword Warrior under a Saniwa, a master who can guide them through time to battle foes attempting to alter history. His motivation is tied to his past and his relationships, particularly with other swords who share his history. He contends with the memory of being broken in battle and the subsequent rejection, which fuels his desire to prove his worth and remain useful and treasured by his current master. Within the narrative, his interactions with other swords are notable, often reflecting familiar or altered dynamics from other adaptations. For instance, the way he addresses his comrade Yamanbagiri Kunihiro differs in this continuity, showing a more distant or formal rapport than in other versions.

Kashu Kiyomitsu's personal development revolves around confronting his trauma. While his cheerful and attention-seeking demeanor often hides his pain, stories that push him into the past or force him to revisit his memories allow for growth. He must learn to reconcile his tragic end with Okita Souji with his present life, moving beyond the fear of being just a tool that can be discarded. He cares deeply for his comrades despite his complaints, and will go to great lengths to help them, proving that his desire for connection goes deeper than a simple need for praise.

In combat, Kashu Kiyomitsu demonstrates abilities befitting his history. He is highly agile and possesses great tactical skill in swordsmanship, drawing on the experience of his past wielders. As an uchigatana, he is effective in short-range combat. Notably, when he is severely wounded in battle, he can enter a state of awakening, which allows him to unleash an attack of significantly greater impact. This ability reflects the desperation and fighting spirit that would have been required of him on the chaotic battlefields of the Bakumatsu.
