Description
Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicide-Master is a purebred vampire and one of the most ancient beings in her world, having been created from the manifestation of hatred and legends rather than being a former human. She emerged from the resentment of citizens who overthrew a despotic tyrant known as the Corpse King who ruled from a location called Corpse Castle. After the kingdom relocated, the abandoned castle became her home. She is known for being the vampire who turned the cursed Princess Acerola into a vampire, giving her the name Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade, who would later become known as the King of Monsters.
In terms of personality, Deathtopia is extremely arrogant and prideful, referring to herself using the pompous and masculine pronoun ore-sama, which reflects her rough attitude and way of life. She has a distinctive laugh, kakat, which she later teaches to Princess Acerola, and this unusual manner of laughing is inherited by Kiss-shot and eventually Shinobu. She hates receiving warnings or advice and dislikes having views forced upon her, which makes her come across as rash and headstrong. She places great importance on being cool and hard, and she is proud of the long, elaborate names she creates for herself and her underlings. One of her most defining rules is that she only eats what she kills, and conversely, she kills only what she eats. This principle is extremely important to her, to the point that she would not even drink water, and she has eaten other vampires who warned her about the consequences of such a diet. This rule even applies to herself after committing suicide, as she consumes her own severed remains.
Deathtopia's primary motivation throughout her story is her obsession with eating Princess Acerola, whom she refers to as the Beautiful Princess. After learning that the princess caused the destruction of an entire kingdom simply by her presence, Deathtopia becomes intrigued and decides that Acerola will be her first meal after being resurrected from starvation. Despite the curse on the princess that causes anyone who tries to harm her to die by suicide, Deathtopia stubbornly persists, dying and resurrecting multiple times in her attempts. Her motivations gradually shift from simply wanting to consume the princess to wanting to keep her in the castle and eventually to helping her find salvation from her curse. She admits to herself that she finds joy in raising and remodeling the princess, teaching her to act in a way that masks her inner beauty.
Her role in the story is central to the Acerola Bon Appétit arc within the MONOGATARI Series: OFF & MONSTER Season, where she serves as the narrator. She is the titular protagonist of what was originally outlined as three arcs: Deathtopia Destiny, Deathtopia Destination, and Deathtopia Death Education. She also appears in the Shinobumonogatari arc, where she reunites with Shinobu after nearly 600 years and becomes involved in a case involving mummified high school girls. In this later storyline, she is found in a mummified state and is revived, ultimately being exiled from Japan as punishment for her involvement in the incident.
Regarding key relationships, her most significant connection is with Princess Acerola, whom she transforms into a vampire and names Kiss-shot. Deathtopia gives Acerola the name before biting her, expressing that she wants Acerola to become a vampire she would be proud of, and she does not want her to be servile. After they go their separate ways, Deathtopia takes pride in the stories she hears about Kiss-shot. She also has a relationship with her last remaining servant, Tropicalesque Home-A-Wave Dog-Strings, who remains loyal to her. She admits that she keeps him around simply because he has a nice face, as all her other servants rebelled against her and were killed and eaten. Tropicalesque eventually tries to free his master from her obsession with Acerola by attempting to kill the princess, but he ends up dying permanently in the attempt, and Deathtopia consumes his remains in accordance with her personal rule. She is also known to have a bitter rivalry with the specialist Yozuru Kagenui due to past events.
Deathtopia undergoes notable development throughout her narrative. She begins as a being solely driven by her hunger and her strict dietary code, refusing to compromise on eating only what she kills. When she first encounters Acerola, she is determined to make the princess her meal. However, over time, she develops a genuine attachment to Acerola, finding herself unable to harm her and instead taking on the role of her caretaker and mentor. She teaches Acerola to laugh and to act in a less beautiful, more arrogant manner, essentially shaping her into the vampire Kiss-shot would become. Her physical appearance also changes due to her frequent deaths from starvation. Each time she dies and resurrects, her physical age regresses, causing her to shrink. By the time she starved to death multiple times while keeping Acerola in her castle, she became young enough to appear around ten years old, and she maintains this younger form even after 600 years because she has not eaten since consuming Tropicalesque.
In terms of notable abilities, Deathtopia possesses immense regenerative powers that far exceed those of ordinary vampires. She can be resurrected even if she is turned to dust, which is the source of her name Suicide-Master. However, this regeneration is not without cost, as each resurrection causes her physical age to regress, making her younger and weaker. There is also a risk that she could eventually die permanently if she continues to die too many times. She can spread her wings and possesses other standard vampire abilities, which are inherited by Kiss-shot. Despite her power, she is vulnerable to silver, as shown when her hand is burned by touching a silver candlestick. She also has enhanced senses and can fly, having flown over mountains of corpses to track down Princess Acerola. Her nickname is The Death-prepared, Death-inevitable, Death-certain Vampire, reflecting her unique relationship with death and resurrection.
