Description
Eko is a young girl who enters the story as a captive in a traveling circus, where she is put on display alongside her younger brother. When Fushi first discovers her, she is covered in filth, with only her eyes visible through the grime on her face and body. After being freed and cleaned, she is revealed to be a thin child with large, cat-like eyes and long, wavy hair. During a later Nokker attack, she cuts her hair shorter to keep it out of the way and to fit under a helmet. Her name comes from her own mispronunciation; when she sees a cat and attempts to say neko, she says eko instead, and Fushi decides to call her by that name.
Eko is a member of a mysterious group sometimes called the clay pot people. An observer speculates that she may be part of the Doki people because of the unique earthenware pot she always carries. This clay pot is her primary means of communication, as she never speaks verbally. It appears she is mute, possibly due to the trauma of her past, or this is simply a trait of her people. Through the pot, she can share her thoughts and memories with Fushi when he touches it, especially when he assumes the form of her deceased brother.
