Description
Karla, also known as Karula or Carla, is a character from the world of darkness, a realm distinct from the Earth where most of the story takes place. She is introduced as the childhood friend of another character named Rupa, and her entire existence is defined by her long-standing and overwhelming love for him. For over a decade, she has pursued Rupa with a single-minded passion, her feelings having grown from simple childhood affection into a fierce and unwavering obsession.

In terms of appearance, Karla initially conceals herself in the flowing, all-encompassing robes common to the inhabitants of the world of darkness. When she sheds these robes, she is revealed to be a beautiful young woman with dark skin, pale eyes, and pale hair styled in a flowing mane with two small bundles at her temples. A unique physical trait is a bead-tipped tendril on her forehead, reminiscent of an anglerfish's lure, often hidden beneath her hair. Her typical attire is a black two-piece bikini, accompanied by black boots, a headband, armbands, and white pads on her shoulders, elbows, and knees. She is almost always seen heavily armed, carrying a bandolier of mushrooms across her torso, grenades on her hip, and a large pistol holstered on her thigh, which reflects her volatile personality.

Her personality is one of intense passion and extremes. Karla throws herself wholeheartedly into everything she does, which in this case means winning Rupa's love. However, this passion is coupled with a violent, temperamental, and unrestrained nature. When consumed by jealousy or rage, she attacks her targets wildly with any weapon at her disposal. Her love for Rupa curdles into possessive fury after he shows her a picture of his bride-to-be, Lum, which transforms her from a doting childhood friend into a violent assailant who constantly threatens and terrorizes him. She is headstrong, stubborn to a fault, and reluctant to accept blame for her actions. Even when Rupa directly states that he dislikes her because she keeps attacking him, she refuses to admit that her behavior is the problem. This self-destructive cycle means that her relentless pursuit is the very thing pushing Rupa further away, making her her own worst enemy.

Karla's primary role in the story is as a catalyst and a parallel to the main characters. She first appears when she crashes her spaceship into the vessel carrying Ataru Moroboshi's rescue party, who are on their way to save Lum from her arranged marriage to Rupa. After colliding with the group, Karla teams up with Ataru to infiltrate the wedding ceremony, hoping to stop it and claim Rupa for herself. Her plan involves using a fake marriage license to get past the guards, but when that fails, she resorts to blasting her way in with a large firearm. Her confrontation with Rupa and Lum is chaotic, involving a rooftop chase and a moment where she nearly falls to her death before being saved by Rupa. Following the wedding's disruption, she travels to Earth, bringing with her mushrooms from her world. When she offers these mushrooms for a hotpot, she neglects to mention they grow explosively when exposed to light and heat, resulting in a giant mushroom forest overrunning the town of Tomobiki and setting the stage for the final conflict.

Her key relationships are almost exclusively centered on Rupa. Their dynamic is a distorted mirror of the primary relationship between Ataru and Lum. Like Ataru, Rupa runs from the woman who loves him, and like Lum, Karla is a determined, powerful alien girl who refuses to give up. However, where Lum is generally good-natured, Karla's methods are fueled by violent jealousy and coercion, with Rupa revealing that as a child he only said he liked her because she was holding him at gunpoint.

Her relationship with Ataru is based on a temporary, practical alliance born from a shared goal of disrupting the wedding, though she is just as willing to attack him when he gets in her way. Karla undergoes a significant, if rapid, development over the course of her appearance. After the mushroom crisis begins, she is forced to call Rupa for help. Their subsequent arguments and the pressures of the situation lead to a breakthrough. Rupa finally confesses that he loves her and wants her to return to the world of darkness with him as his bride. Upon hearing this, her aggressive demeanor vanishes, and she happily throws herself into his arms, showing that her passionate and devoted core, while often destructive, can also lead to genuine happiness.

As for notable abilities, Karla possesses the physical attributes common to many aliens in the series, allowing her to survive falls and engage in combat. Her primary skills are her proficiency with a variety of weapons, from pistols to large firearms and grenades. She is also knowledgeable about the unique flora of the world of darkness, specifically the fast-growing, light-sensitive mushrooms she uses to cause chaos. Her most defining traits, however, are not superhuman powers but her immense willpower, her capacity for violence, and an almost unbreakable stubbornness in the pursuit of her desires.
