TV-Series
Description
Shutaro's father, known in the series primarily by his family role, is a supporting character in Urusei Yatsura. His personal name is never disclosed; he is identified simply as the father of Shutaro Mendo and his younger sister Ryoko. He stands at the top of the Mendo Corporation, one of the most powerful and wealthy family conglomerates in the series, whose resources include a private army and a vast fortune passed down through generations.

In bearing, he carries himself with the pride and dignity expected of the family patriarch. He presents a serious and composed public face, but he is at heart something of a jokester, and he frequently conceals his playful nature behind that solemn exterior. This mischievous side appears to be shared by his daughter Ryoko, who seems to have inherited much of her troublemaking streak from him. Within the family, he also joins in the household's habit of treating Shutaro, the designated heir, as a source of amusement, involving him in elaborate and often inconvenient schemes rather than simply leaving him to enjoy his status in peace.

His main motivation in the story is tied to his position. As the head of the Mendo conglomerate, he is concerned with protecting the family's reputation, wealth, and continuity, with Shutaro expected to one day carry on the line. Yet he does not approach this duty with complete solemnity, and his enjoyment of mischief shows that he values entertainment as much as authority. His curiosity about his son's character is visible in moments such as his astonished reaction to learning that Ataru Moroboshi is even more devoted to chasing women than Shutaro himself.

Within the narrative, he functions as a representative of the Mendo family's power and eccentricity. He appears in stories centered on the household, where the family's immense resources and odd customs regularly create conflict and comedy. His appearances span the history of the series, from the original manga and the first television anime through the OVAs and the film Lum the Forever, and he retains the same role in the 2022 television remake. Over the course of these appearances he does not undergo meaningful personal development; his function remains consistent, serving as a comic figure of authority whose games and expectations complicate his son's life.

His key relationships are defined by family. With Shutaro, he is a father who expects his heir to uphold the family name, but who also treats him as a plaything in the family's games. With Ryoko, he shares a clear temperamental bond, as her troublemaking personality is largely attributed to him. He also belongs to the wider Mendo generation represented by the grandfather, whose attitudes help shape the household's treatment of its heir.

Shutaro's father possesses no supernatural abilities and takes part in no special combat. His influence comes entirely from his standing as the head of the Mendo Corporation. The access this gives him to the family's enormous wealth, private forces, and institutional authority, together with his ability to set the tone of the household, is what makes him significant to the story.
