TV-Series
Description
The character referred to in Italian as Padre di Ataru, and in the original Japanese as Ataru no Chichi, is the father of the protagonist Ataru Moroboshi in the anime Urusei Yatsura. He is never given a personal name in the series and is identified only through his role in the Moroboshi household. He is an ordinary middle-class Japanese salaryman who works regular office hours to support his wife and son, and the family lives in a modest home that frequently becomes the stage for the chaos surrounding Ataru and the alien Lum after she comes to live with them. A recurring gag tied to his background is that every time the house is destroyed in the course of events, he is implied to have to take out yet another loan to pay for repairs.

In terms of personality, he is a mild-mannered and passive man who wants nothing more than a quiet and peaceful family life. At home he is often seen wearing traditional Japanese clothing, and among his habits are reading the newspaper and tending to his small garden. He has very little authority within his own household, as his wife clearly dominates their marriage and he is unable to stand up to her. When situations become critical, his typical response is to hide behind his newspaper rather than take action. Despite his timid and resigned demeanor, he genuinely cares about his family, and he is notably affectionate toward Lum and her young cousin Ten, treating them almost as though they were his own children.

His main motivation is the desire for stability and financial security for his household, along with the hope that his son's troublesome behavior will stop causing problems. He works diligently as a salaryman, and he constantly worries about the trouble that Ataru and Lum's relationship brings, lamenting the damage, the debts, and the general disruption of his home life. As a supporting character, he does not drive the plot, but his presence provides a domestic counterpoint to the bizarre and supernatural events of the series, showing how ordinary life is affected by them. His exasperated reactions and his household itself are recurring sources of comedy.

Within his key relationships, he is the submissive partner to his wife, who holds the upper hand in the family. Toward Ataru, he is a weary but caring father who complains about his son's behavior and extraordinary bad luck yet never actually turns his back on him. Toward Lum, he is welcoming and warm, accepting her presence in the home, and he extends the same fondness to Ten. The character shows little development over the course of the anime, serving instead as a consistent comedic figure; the main change in his circumstances is a deepening resignation as Lum's arrival and the increasingly strange events at home add to his worries and financial burdens. He possesses no supernatural abilities or notable combat skills. His defining traits are his endurance in the face of constant domestic upheaval, his continued dedication to providing for his family, and his habit of retreating behind his newspaper whenever the situation becomes too much for him.
