Description
Joshua Juukulius is the younger brother of the renowned knight Julius Juukulius, though it is noted that the two may not share a direct blood relation and were instead raised together from a very young age within the Juukulius household. His exact age is given as seventeen or nineteen in different sources, and his birthday is January 10. Joshua is a member of the Anastasia Camp, serving as a messenger and an aide.
In terms of appearance, Joshua is a handsome young man with a slender build and refined features. He has long, light purple hair which he typically ties at the back of his neck, and sharp, upward-slanting yellow eyes. A key part of his appearance is the monocle he wears, which contributes to his overall scholarly and prim demeanor. His clothing is always well-tailored and formal, befitting his noble status.
Joshua has a serious yet generally amiable personality, though he lacks the composed and unflappable nature of his older brother. He can become flustered and agitated by the unexpected actions of others. The most dominant aspect of his personality is an intense, almost obsessive admiration and respect for his brother Julius. He frequently praises his brother at length, and any mention of Julius can cause him to lose his composure and launch into a passionate speech about his brother's greatness. However, beneath this courteous exterior, he initially held subtly racist views towards demihumans and is described as having a narrow worldview.
His primary motivation stems from a deep-seated inferiority complex. Joshua was born with a sickly constitution and remained physically weak throughout his childhood, unable to train as a knight like his brother. He spent his early years bedridden, reading books and observing Julius practice swordsmanship, wishing he could join him. Because of his poor health, he has no combat skills and has never learned to fight. Instead, he embraced his role as an intellectual supporter and a scholar of sorts, acting as an assistant and messenger for the Anastasia Camp.
Joshua's role in the story becomes prominent when he is sent as a messenger to the Roswaal mansion, extending an invitation from Anastasia Hoshin to Emilia to visit the watergate city of Priestella. It is during the events in Priestella that he suffers a terrible fate. Joshua is attacked by Roy Alphard, one of the Sin Archbishops of the Witch Cult representing Gluttony. Roy consumes Joshua's name and memories, erasing his existence from the minds of almost everyone in the world and placing him into a state of suspended animation. After this event, only Subaru Natsuki retains any memory of who Joshua is.
His relationship with his brother, Julius, is the most significant in his life. Despite his admiration, Joshua also harbored hidden feelings of jealousy and saw himself as merely a stepping stone for his more gifted brother. The two share a complex history involving Julius accidentally worsening Joshua's illness as children, an event for which Julius has never forgiven himself. Following the attack by Roy Alphard, Julius also has his name consumed, leading to a situation where neither brother is remembered by the world at large.
Joshua possesses no notable combat abilities whatsoever due to his lifelong frailty. His strengths lie in his intelligence and formal education, which make him a capable aide-de-camp, a well-mannered negotiator, and an effective messenger for his faction.
