Description
Ichiya is a significant figure in the narrative as a Honki person, a being who can merge with the bodies of humans, much like his counterpart, Senya. In his physical form, Ichiya has a striking and distinctive appearance that sets him apart. He sports a cropped blue vest with golden details, which wraps around his torso from his pectorals down to his hips, paired with long blue pants that cinch at the ankles. His feet are wrapped in black coverings, and his most notable feature is his hair, which is pulled up into a tight ponytail with two long braids that reach down to his calf, often seen floating behind him. Ichiya’s eyes are lined with black kohl along the lash line to the middle of his lower lid, and his pointed ears give him a distinctly djinn-like quality. He also bears a tattoo on his chest that extends to his collarbone, which is written with his name.

The background of Ichiya is rooted in a past life as a human in a desert world torn apart by war. In his childhood, he was initially aloof and disinterested, particularly during his first encounter with a younger Senya, whom he largely ignored. However, as time passed, Ichiya opened up and formed a bond with Senya, training alongside him throughout their childhood and into adulthood. Ichiya displayed a caring side during these years, most notably when he showed his appreciation for Senya by writing the latter’s name in the dirt with a stick during a quiet night by a fire. This camaraderie eventually came to an end due to a falling out, the specifics of which Ichiya holds a deep grudge over. Both he and Senya ultimately met their end by being shot and killed during the ongoing war that plagued their original world.

In the present day, Ichiya’s personality is defined by a profound disinterest in those he deems weak and a single-minded desire to inhabit the body of a powerful host. He is described as manipulative and vengeful, preying on the emotions of the humans he possesses to strengthen his hold on them. Ichiya does not seek a harmonious cohabitation with his host, unlike Senya. Instead, he actively pushes his hosts toward fear, anger, and ruthlessness. He appeals to their insecurities and fears, encouraging them to seek revenge and power against those around them, thus amplifying his connection and influence.

Ichiya’s role in the story is that of an antagonist and a direct opposition to Senya. His primary motivation is to find a vessel with sufficient strength and darkness. He initially resides within Akutaro Shindo, the emperor of the NG Boys. Ichiya appears behind Shindo like a phantom, granting him power and fueling his sadistic and underhanded nature. However, Ichiya sees Shindo as a temporary and ultimately unsatisfactory host. Upon encountering Matakara Asamine, who is emotionally devastated by the stabbing of his brother and consumed by a long-held darkness, Ichiya abandons Shindo without hesitation. He views Matakara as a superior vessel and uses a special bullet to fully possess him, casting Shindo aside now that he has found someone stronger.

The relationship between Ichiya and Matakara is one of exploitation and corruption. Ichiya takes advantage of Matakara’s grief and the “shadow” of weakness that has loomed over him since childhood. He isolates Matakara from his friends and urges him to defeat Arajin, manipulating him into believing that this will purge his weakness. This is a sharp contrast to Ichiya’s other key relationship: his rivalry with Senya. Where Senya seeks to live within Arajin and appears to yearn for a match with his old friend, Ichiya represents the darker path their shared history could take. The two were once long-time friends and comrades, but their falling out has left Ichiya with a bitter grudge, making their conflict a central part of the supernatural struggle.

Notable abilities of Ichiya stem from his nature as a Honki person. He has the power to merge with and possess human beings, abandoning one host for another if he deems them more suitable. He can manipulate his hosts by amplifying their negative emotions and can use a bullet as a medium to facilitate complete possession. Ichiya also demonstrates the ability to perceive and comment on the inner darkness or weakness within a person’s heart, which he uses as a tool for psychological manipulation.
