Description
Calca Bessarez is a prominent character from the Roble Holy Kingdom, where she holds the title of Holy Queen. As the nation's first female monarch, she is often referred to as the Holy Princess rather than Holy Queen, a nuance that reflects the political challenges she faced. Known by the epithets "the Holy Princess of Purity" and the "Treasure of Roble," she is a young woman in her mid-twenties who has ruled for approximately a decade.
Calca possesses a startlingly beautiful and saintly appearance, characterized by long, lustrous golden hair that falls to her knees and gentle, drooping blue eyes. Her beauty is considered a national treasure, often compared to other renowned beauties in the world. She wears a distinctive white crown, which is a magical item and the focal point for an ancient national ritual. Despite her regal and dignified position, her attire includes a dress with a high slit, a choice she makes to feel more attractive, as she is deeply conscious of her unmarried status.
In terms of personality, Calca is defined by her profound kindness and genuine care for her people. Her deepest aspiration as a ruler is to create a country where no one has to cry, and she works towards the happiness of even the weakest of her citizens. A remarkable trait that sets her apart from nearly everyone in her devoutly religious nation is her lack of prejudice. She holds no inherent hatred for demihumans or heteromorphic beings, believing that coexistence is possible so long as they mean no harm to humanity. This open-mindedness extends to the Sorcerer Kingdom ruled by the undead Ainz Ooal Gown, arguing that a ruler's nature is irrelevant if they perform their duties well. However, her kindness is also her greatest weakness as a leader. Calca is a classic "good person" who struggles to take a hard line or make unpopular decisions. She is often described as a "people-pleaser" who avoids underhanded tactics, leading to a failure to fully consolidate power against the conservative southern nobles or curb the nation's widespread anti-demihuman sentiment. The Baharuth Emperor, Jircniv, dismisses her as ineffective. While her reign was stable for a time, her gentle approach left the kingdom's deep-seated problems unresolved.
Beneath her serene and authoritative exterior, Calca harbors a personal anxiety about marriage. Having reached her mid-twenties without a suitable partner, she desperately desires a husband who will love her for herself, not for her status. This has led to an unusual secret hobby: the intense, almost obsessive research and development of divine magic for skincare. She has created advanced magical techniques to maintain her youth and beauty, making her the world's foremost expert in magical cosmetics, though she never reveals this to anyone, not even her closest friends. Her close, unmarried relationship with the Custodio sisters has also fueled unfounded rumors about her romantic life, much to her private frustration.
Calca's role in the story begins when the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth, a guise of the Nazarick NPC Demiurge, invades the Holy Kingdom. In response to the crisis, she issues a general mobilization order and, to inspire her soldiers, personally takes to the battlefield in the fortress city of Kalinsha. During the assault, she attempts to negotiate with Jaldabaoth to stall for time, a plan frustrated by her subordinates. When battle is joined, she provides support with her powerful divine magic. However, the demon proves far too strong. Jaldabaoth's servant, an Evil Lord Wrath, captures her with ease, and in a grotesque twist, uses her body as a bludgeon to smash her own soldiers, resulting in horrific injuries to her face. She is then taken captive.
Her fate is grim. After the fall of Kalinsha, her subjects believe her dead and her body missing. When the liberation army, now allied with Ainz, once again confronts Jaldabaoth, the demon appears with Calca's corpse in hand, now missing its upper half. The body is used again as a weapon, this time against her paladins, and is ultimately discarded and destroyed. Ainz briefly considers resurrecting her to use as a puppet, but ultimately decides against it, deeming the cost unnecessary for his plans. In the aftermath, her body is cremated. Ironically, a queen who valued her beauty and her people's happiness above all else meets an ugly, brutal end, becoming a tool for the very destruction she sought to prevent.
Her key relationships are few but significant. She trusts her brother, Caspond, who gave up his claim to the throne for her. Her most important alliances are with the Custodio sisters: Remedios Custodio, the passionate and prejudiced Holy Paladin, and Kelart Custodio, the brilliant and calculating High Priest. This trio forms the "Holy Trinity" that supports the kingdom, with Remedios providing martial strength and Kelart managing the political underhandedness Calca dislikes. Calca is a prodigiously talented divine magic caster, having been able to use fourth-tier spells since the age of fifteen. She can summon angels such as the Principality of Peace, cast offensive spells like Holy Ray, and possesses a powerful national treasure used to focus the massive ritual magic known as the Last Holy War. Ultimately, Calca Bessarez is a portrait of a kind and idealistic ruler whose virtues, when faced with an utterly merciless and overpowering enemy, become the very traits that seal her tragic fate.
