Description
Gachi Gorilla is a character from the anime Me & Roboco, where he serves as one of the primary friends and classmates of the protagonist, Bondo Taira. He is an eleven-year-old boy who possesses a unique and striking appearance, bearing a strong resemblance to a gorilla, complete with a robust build, dark hair, and features that often lead to him being judged by his looks alone. This visual gag is central to his character, as despite his animalistic face, he is unequivocally a human elementary school student. Standing at 142 centimeters tall and weighing 70 kilograms, his physical presence is as formidable as his personality is gentle. A notable verbal tic accompanies his speech, often ending his sentences with a gorilla-like "Uho".
The most defining aspect of Gachi Gorilla is the stark contrast between his intimidating exterior and his profoundly kind-hearted nature. While he is publicly known as a troublemaker and often participates in teasing Bondo alongside their mutual friend Motsuo, this behavior is a facade born of kindness. Far from being a bully, he is described as a person of remarkable character, almost to the extent of being called a saint. He is deeply filial, caring for his many younger siblings, and values moral principles, manners, and friendship above all else. His internal motivations are rooted in maintaining harmony and peace. He often pretends to be the villain or the aggressor specifically to cheer up Bondo when he is down or to protect the group dynamic, finding joy in the lively reactions he provokes. This selfless behavior means that few people recognize his true goodness, although the character Akane is noted to see through his act and holds feelings for him, a fact of which he remains completely unaware.
Gachi Gorilla's backstory explains the origin of his public persona. Before Bondo transferred to their school, Gachi was hurt by the thoughtless words of classmates who were disturbed by his immense strength and kindness. In response, he began pretending to be a delinquent, distancing himself from others alongside Motsuo, who was in a similar situation of being misunderstood. This changed when he met Bondo, who accepted him without prejudice, resulting in the three of them forming an unbreakable friendship. In the context of the story, he serves as a reliable and virtuous friend who balances Bondo's normalcy with Roboco's chaos. He holds a special, albeit one-sided, affection for Roboco, finding her unique quirks and clumsiness to be "cute." Despite his gentle feelings, Roboco typically treats him roughly, subjecting him to slapstick violence and absurd situations, which he endures without complaint. His role within his family is significant as well; he is the eldest son among five siblings, and his family operates an animal hospital, a responsibility that sees him often helping his mother look after the younger children when he is not playing with his friends.
Regarding his abilities, Gachi Gorilla possesses superhuman levels of physical toughness and resilience for an eleven-year-old. He has demonstrated the ability to be thrown, buried, or struck with tremendous force and bounce back effortlessly, a durability that often rivals or surpasses that of the powerful maid robot Roboco. His physical strength is equally prodigious, allowing him to perform feats of athleticism that are far beyond normal human limits. He is notably the ace pitcher for his baseball team, the Bermuda Gorillars, showcasing elite athletic prowess. This combination of a saintly personality, a tragic backstory of misunderstanding, immense physical power, and his role as the emotional core of his friend group defines Gachi Gorilla as a layered character who subverts his own monstrous appearance at every turn.
