Description
Norah Arendt is a young woman from the church town of Ruvinheigen who works as a shepherdess, a role she fills with extraordinary skill. She is first introduced as a lonely and hardworking individual who spends most of her time in the company of her loyal sheepdog, Enek, with whom she forms an inseparable team. Her exceptional ability to protect her flock from wolves draws unwanted attention from the church, which grows suspicious that she may be using supernatural tricks or witchcraft to achieve such results, creating a quiet but persistent tension in her life. Despite this, Norah remains gentle, polite, and modest, never hesitating to offer help to travelers she meets on the road.
Her personal dream is to become a tailor, and she secretly hopes to save enough money to join the tailors guild, a goal that represents her desire for a life beyond the fields and the suspicion of the church. Norah encounters the traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence and the wolf deity Holo when they hire her to guard their flock during a journey to Lubeinheigen. This meeting becomes a turning point for her. Through her interactions with Lawrence and Holo, she begins to develop a more independent and brave side, learning to face problems with greater confidence and resolve.
In terms of key relationships, Norah shares a deep and trusting bond with Enek, who is her constant companion and most reliable partner in work. Her connection with Lawrence and Holo is built on mutual respect, though it is not without complexity. Holo, perceptive and territorial, initially feels a sharp jealousy toward Norah due to the easy rapport she forms with Lawrence. However, Holo eventually comes to respect Norah for her genuine skill and quiet competence as a shepherd. For his part, Lawrence treats Norah with kindness and fairness, seeing her not just as a hired hand but as a person worthy of trust and dignity.
Norah’s development extends beyond her initial arc. As she becomes more confident and self-reliant, she begins to move away from the limitations imposed by her circumstances. In later parts of the story, long after her first journey with Lawrence and Holo, she is shown traveling alongside the merchant Eve Bolan, indicating that she has left her life as a shepherdess behind and carved out a new path for herself.
As for her notable abilities, Norah is an unusually talented shepherdess. Her skill at guarding sheep from wolves is so refined that it borders on the prodigious, a fact that both defines her reputation and causes her trouble. Her success is rooted in a deep understanding of her flock and a seamless partnership with Enek, whose training and instincts complement her own judgment. Her abilities earn her not only the suspicion of the church but also the respect of those who come to know her true character.
