Description
Elsa Schtingheim is a young woman who serves as the caretaker of the church in the village of Tereo. Her position is highly unusual, as she is a woman holding a post typically reserved for men. This came about because she was chosen for religious training by the previous priest, Father Franz, and after his death, there was no one else to take over his duties.

In appearance, Elsa is of shorter stature with dark brown hair that is tightly bound up, which gives her bangs a more pronounced look. She has honey-yellow eyes and a layer of freckles spread across the top of her nose and under her eyes. Her attire is a long-sleeved priest's robe, and around her neck, she wears a wooden pendant bearing the symbol of the church.

When first encountered by the traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence and the wise wolf Holo, Elsa comes across as cold, suspicious, and unwelcoming. She is guarded and even lies about her knowledge of the nearby Diendran Abbey. This initial hostility is largely a consequence of the difficult situation facing Tereo and the villagers' deep dislike for the church hierarchy in the larger town of Enber. As the story progresses and she becomes more familiar with Lawrence and Holo, a softer and more caring side of her personality emerges. She has a strong desire to protect her village, a duty she takes so seriously that she is willing to risk her own life for it.

Elsa's motivations are deeply rooted in her faith and her sense of responsibility. She strives for what she believes is right and correct, and she expects the same from others. This can lead her to be critical of those with a more carefree attitude, such as Holo. Her role in the story is pivotal as a figure who guards important information and local secrets. Lawrence and Holo come to Tereo seeking a person named Louis Rana Schtinghilt, who they believe can help them on their journey north, and they discover that this person is directly connected to Elsa's mentor, Father Franz. She becomes a key ally in the conflict between the village of Tereo and the oppressive church of Enber.

Elsa has several important relationships. Her bond with Father Franz is formative, as he was her teacher and the reason she came to lead the church. She is also in a romantic relationship with Gyoam Evan, a miller from the same village. Their relationship is significant, as it develops alongside the main plot. Elsa also becomes an acquaintance of Lawrence and Holo, learning to trust them and accepting their help to save her community. Years later, she also briefly mentors a young boy named Tote Col, teaching him proper conduct in a way that challenges Holo's influence over him.

Over the course of her appearances, Elsa undergoes notable development. She is initially defined by her isolation and the immense pressure of protecting Tereo alone. Through her interactions with Lawrence and Holo, she is forced to confront her own beliefs and the nature of miracles, especially when she witnesses Holo's supernatural abilities. She grows more decisive and becomes a more active participant in the village's salvation, even using her faith as a tool to help stage a miraculous event. In later volumes, her journey takes her out of Tereo as she travels with a bookseller to find a successor for her church, revealing a hidden dream to leave the priesthood and live a simple life with Evan. Much later, correspondence indicates her dream is eventually realized, as she writes to old friends from a small town, now married to Evan and with three children.

Elsa's notable abilities are less about physical prowess and more about her knowledge and conviction. As a religious figure, she has an understanding of church doctrine, local religious politics, and the history kept by her late mentor. Her strongest ability is her unwavering will to protect her village and her willingness to take risks, including standing up to powerful religious authorities, to achieve that goal.
