Description
Yamada Asaemon Jikka serves as the current head of the Yamada clan and holds the rank of 3rd Asaemon. He is a major supporting character who becomes deeply involved in the expedition to the island of Kotaku. Initially, Jikka is assigned to monitor the criminal Hōrubō, but his mission is cut short when Hōrubō is killed at sea by the bandit Aza Chōbei. Reacting with joy rather than frustration, Jikka shakes Chōbei's hand in gratitude and returns to the mainland, becoming the first person known to escape the island alive and in perfect condition. Despite this success, he is later ordered to join a second landing party and return to the island to continue the search for the Elixir of Life, making him the only character to travel to Kotaku twice.

Jikka is defined by a laid-back and hedonistic personality that starkly contrasts with the stern dedication of his fellow clan members, such as Shugen. He openly prioritizes enjoying life over pursuing status, and his behavior reflects this philosophy. He has been reported to attend execution assignments while intoxicated and once sold his own sword to fund his sexual exploits in the red-light district, which he refers to as indulging in pleasures of the flesh. This conduct has earned him a poor reputation within the clan, causing many to doubt his skills. He is also dishonest and opportunistic, admitting he will lie or push his own agenda when advantageous. Despite his lazy demeanor, Jikka is highly analytical and perceptive, proving impossible to deceive and quickly grasping the true, often grim, purposes behind the shogun's missions.

His primary motivation is self-serving. Jikka aims to secure his position as the head of the Yamada clan, not out of duty, but as a means to remove himself from grunt work and live a life of luxury. To achieve this, he shows a cold-hearted and pragmatic side, conspiring with the Aza brothers to eliminate the other surviving ranked Asaemon, displaying little to no concern for their well-being. He is not above creating false reports for the shogun if it serves his goals, such as faking the deaths of survivors to clear his path to leadership. Ultimately, he helps arrange the happy endings for other characters, including setting up a meeting for Gabimaru with his wife Yui, not purely out of altruism but as part of a calculated effort to remove obstacles from his own rise to power.

In terms of abilities, Jikka is exceptionally skilled. Although he carries a simple takemitsu, or bamboo sword, he remains a formidable swordsman. His unique technique, known as the Principle of Things, is an intuitive ability that allows him to perceive how an object will react when force is applied. This talent enables him to cut with his bamboo blade as if it were steel, allowing him to easily decapitate criminals and even sever the head of a monstrous Wadatsumi sea creature. His Tao attribute is Earth, and his analytical mind makes him a cunning strategist rather than a frontline brawler. His past reveals he developed this special intuition at a young age and used it to commit burglary and murder, later choosing to join the Yamada clan specifically to avoid participating in wars.
