Description
Gabimaru, whose birth name is Saku, is the main protagonist of this narrative. He was raised as an orphan in the village of Iwagakure, where he was trained from childhood to be a shinobi and an elite assassin. He eventually inherited the village's title for its strongest warrior, known as Gabimaru the Hollow, a name that reflects his fearsome reputation and his early lack of emotion. Standing at 150 centimeters tall, he is a calm and serious individual who was conditioned to believe he had no feelings, behaving in a monotonous way and killing without guilt or mercy. Despite his small stature, he possesses a will of iron and exceptional physical strength honed through extreme training.
The core of Gabimaru’s personality and the primary driving force behind all his actions is his profound love for his wife, Yui, who is the daughter of the Iwagakure village chief. While he initially appears hollow and bloodthirsty, his wife was the only person who did not treat him as a monster, and through her, he learned that he was not empty but had simply buried his feelings deep inside. Yui is the sole person he deeply trusts and cares for, and his shy and genuine affection for her reveals his true, more humane personality. His primary motivation throughout the story is to escape his past as an assassin and live a peaceful, normal life with her. This desire to retire led the village chief to betray him, arranging for Gabimaru to be captured and sentenced to death.
On death row, Gabimaru is given an opportunity by his executioner, the Yamada Asaemon Sagiri. Instead of being executed, he is invited to join an expedition to the mysterious, dangerous land of Shinsenkyo to retrieve the Elixir of Life. The mission offers a full pardon for his crimes, allowing him to return to his wife, a goal he clings to in order to survive the island's horrors. This establishes his primary role in the story as a death row convict forced to compete in a brutal quest. His relationship with Sagiri is central to the narrative. While she initially serves as his executioner and overseer, their bond develops into a supportive friendship built on mutual respect, without any romantic elements. Gabimaru recognizes her strength and integrity, and she, in turn, helps him reconnect with his humanity and recover his memories when they are later lost. Other key relationships include his fragile alliance with the cunning female shinobi Yuzuriha and his confrontations with other powerful convicts like the Aza brothers.
Throughout his journey on Shinsenkyo, Gabimaru undergoes significant development. He starts as a cold, emotionless killer who is convinced he has no attachment to life, even being suicidal at one point. However, as the story progresses, he gradually becomes more empathetic and humane. His evolution is contrasted against the inhuman monsters of the island, known as the Tensen, highlighting his rediscovery of his own humanity. At one point, he suffers a major setback, losing his memories after a near-fatal battle, which reverts him to a confused, animalistic state. It is through Sagiri’s help and his deep-seated emotional core—specifically his love for his wife—that he recovers these crucial fragments of his identity, reaffirming his purpose to escape the island.
As a shinobi, Gabimaru possesses a wide array of superhuman combat abilities known as Ninjutsu. His powers are primarily fire-based due to his Tao, the life energy found in all things, having a fire attribute. His most notable ability is Ninpō Hibōshi, or Ninja Art Fire Monk, which allows him to raise his body temperature to ignite the oil in his skin, engulfing himself in flames that can incinerate opponents while he maintains a high resistance to burning. He has demonstrated this resistance by surviving execution attempts such as being burned at the stake or boiled alive. Beyond his fire techniques, which include various named attacks like launching flaming projectiles and powerful kicks, Gabimaru is a master of close-quarters combat, capable of eliminating enemies even while bound. As he gains a deeper understanding of Tao, his abilities grow significantly, allowing him to detect the presence of others, conceal his own, and strengthen his physical body enough to injure the immortal Tensen. Overusing this power causes physical changes, such as flowers sprouting on his body, which he eventually learns to control.
