Description
Nurugai is a young girl, about twelve years old, and the last surviving member of the Sanka, a mountain people who lived apart from the authority of the shogunate and were therefore treated as rebels. She has a small, boyish build, unkempt dark hair, and a simple appearance, wearing rough fur clothing and ornaments from her village. Because of her appearance and her habit of using a masculine first-person pronoun, she is frequently mistaken for a boy, and it is only when her assigned executioner Tenza points out her physique that she openly states she is a girl.
She was born and raised in a hidden mountain village, where her grandfather, who acted as her guardian, taught her the knowledge and skills of the Sanka people, including hunting, tracking, and living off the wilderness. She had no understanding of the larger political world. One day she helped a man she believed to be a lost samurai and guided him to her village. He turned out to be a shogunate agent, and his arrival led to the massacre of the Sanka settlement. Her grandfather was killed before her eyes, and she was taken alive, partly to be interrogated about the locations of other mountain villages. She was then imprisoned and sentenced to death, not because she had committed any crime, but simply because of who she was. She carried heavy guilt over what happened, blaming herself for the destruction of her home, and she spent her time in captivity apologizing to her dead grandfather. This left her in a state of despair and self-destructive indifference, with little desire to keep living.
Her motivation changes through the intervention of Tenza, the Yamada Asaemon executioner assigned to monitor her. He tells her that she does not look like a criminal and encourages her to survive, telling her she should find a way to live. These words rekindle her will to live, and she admits that she wants to go back to the mountains rather than die. She becomes one of the death-row convicts sent to the island of Kotaku on the expedition to find the Elixir of Life in exchange for a pardon, and she is paired with Tenza for the mission.
