Description
Aza Chôbe, also known as the Bandit King, is a major supporting character in Hell's Paradise who begins the story as a notorious criminal leader from Iyo before being recruited for the deadly expedition to a mysterious island.

Born into a family of retainers serving the daimyo of the Akō Domain, Chôbe and his younger brother Tōma experienced a dramatic fall from grace when their master was forced to commit seppuku after attacking a court official. The family lost their status, becoming rōnin and descending into poverty. Their mother died from illness, and their father was later executed for his involvement in a revenge plot with the forty-seven rōnin of Akō. Orphaned and destitute, the two brothers were taken in by bandits who initially planned to sell them. Chôbe, however, quickly took control of the criminals and rose to become their leader. He was eventually arrested and sentenced to death for his numerous crimes, but was given an alternative: join the expedition to find the Elixir of Life on a island believed to be Shinsenkyō, with the promise of forgiveness for his sins.

Chôbe possesses a tall, muscular build with spiky blond hair that includes a small braid. A significant portion of the right side of his face is covered in scars, and his right eye is blind—injuries he sustained while protecting his brother. His physical appearance changes notably throughout the story as he gains access to Tao and other powers. After acquiring resources from the Tensen, his scars grow larger, his skin darkens, his eyes turn white, plant-like vines emerge from his body, and his nails become claw-like. Following a later revival, his body temporarily shrinks to the size of a young child before returning to normal.

His personality is defined by an arrogant, cruel, and extremely violent nature, preferring to solve problems through force rather than communication. Chôbe displays a savage, animalistic demeanor in combat, once drinking the blood of monsters to stay hydrated and instinctively attacking anything alive on sight. He is sadistic, smiling when inflicting pain on others and showing no remorse for his actions. He hates following rules and despises those who obey them, proudly declaring himself his own master and god. Despite this brutal exterior, Chôbe is surprisingly intelligent and calculating, capable of making rational decisions in dangerous situations. He acknowledges having done terrible things but remains unapologetic, stating he did everything for his brother's sake.

Chôbe's primary motivation throughout the story is the survival and protection of his younger brother Tōma, the only person toward whom he shows genuine love and care. This devotion runs so deep that he is willing to sacrifice his own life for Tōma. Upon realizing he could not defeat the powerful Tensen known as Rien, Chôbe pragmatically chose to ally with Lord Tensen to stay close to his brother. In a particularly calculating move, he even performed bochu jutsu with Rien to manipulate the situation to his advantage.

His role in the expedition is as a condemned criminal seeking the Elixir of Life in exchange for amnesty. Tōma, who had infiltrated the Yamada Asaemon executioner clan, freed Chôbe from prison and presented him with the mission. The two brothers operate together on the island, with Chôbe taking the lead in combat while Tōma often provides strategic support and a calmer perspective. Their bond is central to Chôbe's character arc, as nearly every decision he makes is filtered through the lens of keeping his brother alive.

Key relationships include his inseparable bond with Tōma, who serves as both his moral anchor and partner. Chôbe also forms temporary alliances with other convicts and executioners when survival demands it, including fighting alongside Fuchi and Gantetsusai against the Tensen. He holds grudges against those who defeat him, such as Ju Fa, and takes sadistic pleasure in their later humiliation.

Chôbe undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. He begins as a purely destructive force, killing indiscriminately and trusting no one beyond his brother. As the story progresses, he demonstrates a growing capacity for pragmatic cooperation, recognizing when fighting alone is suicidal and forming necessary alliances. His brief glimpse of his parents in the afterlife shows a moment of reflection, as he acknowledges his terrible deeds while reaffirming his commitment to Tōma. His physical transformations through Tao acquisition mirror his evolving nature—from purely human criminal to something more powerful and less human, yet still driven by fraternal love.

In terms of abilities, Chôbe is an exceptionally skilled fighter with superhuman strength, speed, and durability. He possesses Tao, the fundamental energy of life in the world of Hell's Paradise, with a metal attribute. His awakened Tao allows him to perceive and evade attacks that move faster than sound. He has remarkable regenerative capabilities, able to heal from injuries such as a broken neck, severed arms, and massive puncture wounds. When pushed beyond his limits, he can transform into a monstrous form that further amplifies his physical stats and grants him control over multiple vine-like limbs that can attack from any direction. This transformation also enhances his already formidable regeneration. His strength scales above characters capable of cutting large sailing vessels in half, making him one of the more physically powerful combatants on the island.
