Description
Kana Higa, often affectionately called Kaanaa by her close friends and family, is a first-year high school student and a classmate of both Teruaki Nakamura and Hina Kyan. Her most distinctive physical traits are her semi-long, naturally light brown hair which has a soft wave and a golden-brown tint, and her tanned skin, which is the result of being sun-kissed rather than artificially dyed or tanned. This appearance can give her the look of a gal at first glance, but her personality is much more reserved. She comes from a local Okinawan family and has an older brother named Tetsu, a younger sister named Suzu, and a cousin named Naoya, all of whom she is very close with.

In terms of personality, Kana is characterized by a notable shyness and a somewhat introverted nature. Despite this outward reserve, she possesses a strong inner resolve and a caring heart. She has a family-oriented side and often looks after her younger relatives. As a local girl raised with traditional influences, particularly from her grandmother, she is fluent in the Okinawan dialect to a level typical for a high school student, which becomes one of her most defining traits.

Kana’s primary motivation throughout the story is her secret crush on Teruaki. Their first meeting occurred before the high school entrance ceremony, when Teruaki saved her hat from blowing away, an act of kindness that left a lasting impression on her. She was surprised and delighted to discover that he had transferred into her class, and she developed romantic feelings for him. To create more opportunities to talk with him, she proactively offers to serve as a translator for Teruaki, helping him understand Hina, who speaks a very dense, often incomprehensible form of the Okinawan dialect.

Her central role in the story is that of a cultural and linguistic bridge. Because she can understand both standard Japanese and the heavy local dialect, she is the key that allows Teruaki to communicate with and get to know Hina, all while hiding her own feelings. Unbeknownst to Teruaki, who is completely oblivious to her crush, her willingness to help is driven by her desire to be near him. This creates the show’s central romantic tension, as she often finds herself in the bittersweet position of facilitating a connection between Teruaki and the girl he likes.

Kana’s key relationships are primarily defined by this unrequited love and her family connections. Her dynamic with Teruaki is complicated by his polite insistence on calling her Higa-san, a formal address he uses for everyone, despite her and her family wishing he would use her first name. She is best friends with Hina, and their relationship is warm and supportive, even as she quietly pines for Teruaki. While she is generally kind to Teruaki, she can become flustered or slightly jealous when he shows clear affection for Hina. Her older brother Tetsu, her sister Suzu, and her cousin Naoya are all very fond of Teruaki and often encourage him to be less formal with Kana, adding to her embarrassment.

Though the story primarily follows Teruaki’s perspective, Kana experiences a subtle but meaningful development. She begins as a girl with a hidden crush, using translation as an excuse to talk to Teruaki. As events unfold, including a moment when Teruaki tries and fails to confess his feelings to Hina, Kana is forced to confront the reality of her situation. Her quiet endurance and the growing awareness of her own unrequited love become a more prominent aspect of her character, showcasing her inner strength and emotional depth.

Kana possesses two notable abilities. Her primary skill is her proficiency in the Okinawan dialect, which she uses to act as a linguistic and cultural mediator between Teruaki and the more traditional speakers like Hina. She often interprets not just words but also local customs and phrases, though she occasionally mistakenly assumes certain Okinawan things are common knowledge everywhere. Her secondary ability is playing the sanshin, a traditional Okinawan three-stringed instrument, which she learned from her older brother during her childhood. Additionally, in an ironic twist for someone who grew up on an island, she is actually unable to swim.
