Description
The Man-God, also known as Hitogami or the self-proclaimed Human God, is a central antagonist in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. He is described as the sole survivor of the ancient Seven Gods and resides in the world of Nothingness among the seven worlds. Physically, his appearance is unsettling and difficult to recall; he has a blank white face with a grin that seems covered in a mosaic, making his exact features hard to remember. In the anime adaptation, he is notably the only character rendered with computer-generated imagery to emphasize his otherworldly nature.

Personality-wise, the Man-God presents himself as friendly, casual, and helpful, especially when first interacting with individuals he wishes to manipulate. However, his true nature is that of a trickster and a master manipulator. He takes a sick sense of enjoyment from deceiving people into destroying what they value most, and he laughs at their despair when they realize what they have done. He acts as a puppet master who pulls strings from behind the scenes, using psychological control and future sight to orchestrate events to his advantage.

His primary motivation is survival and the elimination of his sworn enemy, the Dragon God Orsted. The Man-God fears that Rudeus Greyrat's children will grow up to become powerful enough to threaten him, and he seeks to prevent this outcome by any means necessary. He also seems to derive entertainment from the chaos and suffering he causes, and he has a history of inciting conflicts that lead to the destruction of entire worlds. In his view, he is the only true god in the Six-Sided Universe, and he acts with a sense of entitlement and amusement.

Within the story, the Man-God first appears to Rudeus in dreams after the Fittoa Region Teleport incident, offering cryptic advice that initially appears beneficial. He claims to help Rudeus because it seems interesting, but his true goal is to manipulate Rudeus into becoming a useful pawn against Orsted. Over time, his role evolves from a seemingly helpful mentor into a clear and dangerous antagonist. In an alternate timeline, he successfully gains Rudeus's full trust and uses that influence to cause the deaths of Rudeus's family and bring ruin to the entire world.

The Man-God's key relationships are defined by manipulation and enmity. His most significant relationship is with Dragon God Orsted, whom he views as his greatest threat and target. He collects human agents known as apostles, such as Rudeus, to do his bidding, though he keeps his true motives hidden from them. He also has a long history of manipulating other gods and important figures, including the murder of Lunaria, the wife of the first Dragon God, and inciting wars that led to the indirect destruction of multiple worlds. Despite his friendly demeanor, he does not form genuine bonds and sees all beings as tools for his survival and entertainment.

In terms of development, the Man-God does not undergo a change in character throughout the story; his nature as a manipulative god remains consistent. What develops is the audience's and Rudeus's understanding of him, shifting from trust to suspicion to outright opposition as his schemes become clearer. His role becomes increasingly sinister as the story progresses, particularly after key turning points reveal the true extent of his deception.

The Man-God possesses several notable abilities. He has powerful future sight that allows him to see potential outcomes and guide his apostles accordingly. He can communicate with people in the mortal world through dream visitations, appearing in their dreams to offer advice or issue commands. He cannot directly intervene in the physical world, which is why he relies on manipulation and apostles to achieve his goals. He also seems to have the ability to erase the specific memory of his face and voice from those who interact with him, making it difficult for others to describe him accurately. His domain is the world of Nothingness, a realm outside the normal world, which he can use to observe and influence events from a distance.
