Description
Langal, also rendered as Rohngall, is a magus affiliated with the Clock Tower, the central institution of the Mage’s Association. He specializes in the craft of puppet-making, a form of magecraft that allows him to create lifelike decoys. Physically, he appears as an elderly man with short white hair, a short white beard, prominent eyebrows, and typically wears a dark robe along with a rounded beige cap that has a silver band around its hem. This appearance, however, may not reflect his true form.
His role in the story begins when the Mage’s Association detects an unusual Holy Grail War taking place in Snowfield, a city in the United States. Langal is dispatched to investigate the ritual. He brings along his pupil, Faldeus Dioland, whom he had trained in magecraft. Unbeknownst to Langal, Faldeus is actually a spy for the American organization that orchestrated the false Holy Grail War. Upon their arrival in Snowfield, Faldeus betrays his teacher and has him shot dead by a machine gun. However, the body that falls is merely a puppet; Langal had anticipated danger and had been operating through an artificial vessel from the start. His true body remains hidden, and even after the betrayal he continues to observe the conflict from the shadows.
Langal’s motivations are aligned with the Clock Tower’s interests: to understand the nature of the false Grail War and to assess the threat it poses to the established order of magecraft. His expertise in puppetry gives him a cautious and secretive approach, allowing him to survive an assassination attempt that would have killed a less prepared magus. He maintains a distance from the frontline battles, preferring to work through proxies and information gathering.
His key relationship is with Faldeus Dioland, his former student and betrayer. The betrayal is a defining moment that underscores Langal’s role as an institutional representative caught in a larger conspiracy. He also has connections to other Clock Tower figures, such as Lord El-Melloi II (Waver Velvet), to whom he sends reports via his inner disciple, Christopher. This suggests that Langal remains active behind the scenes, feeding intelligence back to the Association.
In terms of development, Langal experiences a shift from an active investigator to a more covert operator. His initial trust in Faldeus is shattered, but he adapts by relying on his puppetry to maintain a presence in the war without exposing himself. As of the later volumes of the light novel, his true identity and original appearance have not been revealed, leading to speculation among readers that his true body might be one of the already introduced characters, a possibility consistent with the author’s narrative style.
Notable abilities include his mastery of doll magecraft, which allows him to create decoys that are indistinguishable from real human beings. This skill not only saved his life but also enables him to operate in multiple locations or appear to be in places he is not. He does not demonstrate direct combat prowess, as his strength lies in reconnaissance, deception, and survival. His cautious nature and ability to keep his true self concealed are his greatest assets in the chaotic war of Snowfield.
