Description
Hansa Cervantes is an Executor of the Holy Church who serves as the unofficial overseer for the False Holy Grail War in Snowfield. On paper, he is registered as an ordinary priest, but he makes little effort to conceal his true nature from the magi involved in the conflict.
Hansa originally comes from a small village in the mountainous region of Spain. Twenty years before the events of the False Holy Grail War, his hometown was destroyed by a Dead Apostle, leaving him an orphan surviving alone in the wilderness. He was eventually saved by a bishop named Dilo and later adopted by Dilo's acquaintance, Delmio Cervantes, who trained him in martial arts. This tragic past led Hansa to pursue the path of an Executor, becoming a member of the Assembly of the Eighth Sacrament.
In appearance, Hansa is a man of Spanish ethnicity who seems to be in his mid-thirties. He has a striking figure with shoulder-length wavy black hair, a prominent mole under his left eye, and a flashy, distinctive eyepatch covering his right eye. The look of fearless determination in his uncovered eye gives him the appearance of a passionate film actor. He typically wears an ordinary priest's cassock with a cross around his neck, sometimes adding a black long-coat on top. This clothing masks the fact that most of his body has been replaced with highly advanced, partially magical cybernetics. His right eye, concealed by the eyepatch, is an artificial Mystic Eye encased in crystal.
Hansa has a sociable and friendly personality, often appearing carefree and unfazed by dangerous situations. He has a bad habit of becoming distracted while fiddling with his cell phone, even during important conversations, though this does not seem to hamper his physical capabilities. He frequently makes snide remarks towards both enemies and superiors, once sarcastically mocking one of the Dead Apostle Ancestors over the phone. Despite his lax demeanor, he is quick to act when civilians may be in danger from threats such as vampires.
What sets Hansa apart from many of his colleagues is his remarkably tolerant attitude towards the enemies of the Church. While his family and village were slaughtered by Dead Apostles, he bears no desire for revenge or hatred toward their kind, and would overlook a Dead Apostle that suppressed its urges and did not feed on humans. He does not work as an Executor out of religious devotion, instead judging individuals on a case-by-case basis. He claimed he sought to eliminate the Dead Apostle Jester Karture simply because he acts and talks like a bad guy. Other Church members have told him that this lack of enmity towards vampires makes him unfit to be an Executor, but he does not appear to care. This more empathetic and less pragmatic approach stems from the influence of Bishop Dilo, whom he considers one of his three parents alongside his biological mother and adoptive father Delmio.
Hansa is far more friendly with magi like Flat Escardos than his colleagues in the organization, even half-jokingly encouraging Flat to defect to the Church. One of his subordinates in the Quartet describes him as being like a kid deep down. He is also easily angered by comments he views as absolute insults to himself and the Church, having great respect for the Burial Agency and its members, whom he considers to be like a cataclysm walking in the Lord's shadow. As someone who stands merely in the realm of mankind, he is highly offended by being compared to them. Hansa is fond of eating hot peppers, a taste he shares with other Holy Church members such as Kirei Kotomine and Ciel.
In the story, Hansa is stationed at a chapel on top of a casino in Las Vegas with his adoptive father Delmio when he is called upon by the Assembly of the Eighth Sacrament to mediate the Holy Grail War in Snowfield. He pays little attention to the information Delmio tries to provide about his mission, being too focused on his cell phone and talking back flippantly. As he departs, calling his four subordinate nuns known as the Quartet to accompany him, Delmio tests his reflexes by launching a coin at the speed of a bullet at the back of his head. Hansa catches the coin and launches it back at the same speed, assuring his father that his skills have not deteriorated.
He appears in a casino where False Archer and his Master Tine Chelc are staying, and is able to see the hidden Tine. After winning chips by guessing numbers, he tells Archer he is the overseer of the War and needs some luck for the upcoming challenge. He later visits the Snowfield Police Department to meet with Chief Orlando Reeve, engaging in conversation just before an attack by Assassin and subsequently by the Dead Apostle Jester Karture.
Hansa possesses formidable combat abilities that make him a highly effective Executor. His body has been converted into a machine, with roughly seventy percent replaced by the finest technology and mystery the Church could offer. These cybernetic enhancements include the ability to extend his arm up to three meters, scale tall buildings, a grenade launcher hidden in his wrist, various tools concealed in his teeth, and a chainsaw installed in one of his legs. His artificial right eye is a Mystic Eye encased in crystal.
His primary weapons are Black Keys, the standard armament of Church Executors. These are sacraments that take the form of hilts, with mana forming long slender blades when activated. Though they can be used for melee combat, Black Keys are primarily designed as projectiles. They have the power to immobilize targets by stabbing their shadows and can intervene against spiritual beings, allowing Hansa to pin down even Servants, though he cannot kill them. As Conceptual Weapons, Black Keys impose the idea of natural lifespan onto their targets, which can negate the immortality and regeneration of Dead Apostles and vampires whose immortality is based on the concept of eternal youth.
Even as a child living in the mountains, Hansa demonstrated superhuman abilities, being able to catch a coin thrown with the force of a bullet. As an adult cyborg, he can deflect punches that cause distant stone pillars to partially break, stop thrown cars with his leg, and reduce debris hurled at him to dust with his speed. He is fast enough to casually catch a poker chip moving at bullet-like speeds and throw it back while having cut it into pieces that remain intact. During his fight with Jester Karture, a Dead Apostle of significant power, Hansa proved able to land blows that sent his opponent flying into and through walls. While he demonstrates tremendous power as an Executor, Hansa himself maintains that compared to the members of the Burial Agency, he is nothing and not even worthy of being placed on the same plane of existence, believing that comparing him to them would be an insult.
