Description
Lord El‑Melloi II is the name taken by Waver Velvet, a magus who survived the Fourth Holy Grail War in Fuyuki. After that war claimed the life of his teacher Kayneth El‑Melloi Archibald, Waver returned to the Clock Tower, the headquarters of the Mage’s Association, and gradually rose to become one of its twelve Lords. He is the head of the Modern Magecraft Department, the twelfth and newest faculty, and is widely regarded as the most rapidly ascended magus of his generation. His appearance is that of a man in his early thirties with long black hair and a perpetual frown.
As a magus, Lord El‑Melloi II is candid about his own limitations, often calling himself a third‑rate mage. His personal magical abilities are modest: his specialties include basic reinforcement, analysis, detoxification, and the adjustment of leylines and biological processes. He lacks the raw power or inherited mysteries of older, more entrenched families. However, he compensates with exceptional analytical skill, deep knowledge of magecraft theory, and a talent for understanding, improving, and even reverse‑engineering the techniques of other magi. This practice has earned him the nickname “the Plunder King,” because he has been known to dissect and patent the magecraft of defeated rivals. His true strength lies in teaching; his clear, practical lectures attracted a generation of students who had felt alienated by the Clock Tower’s elitism, and he built the El‑Melloi Classroom into a respected institution. For this he is sometimes called “Professor Charisma.”
His personality is shaped by the experiences of the Fourth Holy Grail War, where he served as the Master of Rider, Iskandar (Alexander the Great). The encounter with the king of conquerors transformed him from an insecure, resentful youth into a determined adult. He carries a deep respect for his former Servant and still treasures Iskandar’s summoning catalyst, refusing to sell it even though it could clear most of the El‑Melloi family’s debts. That bond also influences his motivations: he strives to live up to the ideals Iskandar showed him, and he quietly works to protect the dignity of heroic spirits from being treated as mere tools.
In Fate/strange Fake, Lord El‑Melloi II is not a direct participant in the false Holy Grail War taking place in Snowfield. Instead, he is the teacher of Flat Escardos, one of the Masters in that conflict. Flat, a brilliant but uncontrollable student known as one of the “Twin Pillars” of the El‑Melloi Classroom, was drawn to the war against his teacher’s wishes. Lord El‑Melloi II attempts to guide Flat from outside the city, communicating with him and trying to steer him away from the war’s most dangerous outcomes. His role is that of a concerned mentor who must operate under the constraints of the Clock Tower’s political structure. In fact, for the duration of the Snowfield incident, he is effectively confined by the Department of Law, prevented from intervening directly. Despite this, he uses his knowledge and connections to monitor the situation and offer advice.
Key relationships include his adoptive sister Reines El‑Melloi Archisorte, who placed him as the head of the El‑Melloi family; his close student Flat Escardos; and his personal disciple Gray, who accompanies him in his detective work. Through his history with the Fourth Holy Grail War, he also has connections to Rin Tohsaka and other survivors, and he later aids in the dismantling of the Fuyuki Grail alongside her, earning the moniker “the man who dismantled the Holy Grail War.”
His development across the Fate series is one of maturity and acceptance. The brash, insecure teenager who stole his teacher’s relic to prove himself has grown into a man who finds his worth in nurturing the talents of others. He acknowledges that he will never be a truly great magus, but he has built a legacy as an educator and as a guardian of the magecraft world’s ethical boundaries. In Fate/strange Fake, this growth is reflected in his careful, strategic approach to protecting his student, even when he cannot act directly. His notable abilities are not combat‑oriented but intellectual: superior reasoning, extensive knowledge of magical systems, and the capacity to deconstruct and repurpose foreign magecraft. He also possesses a Magic Crest inherited from the Velvet family, though it is largely empty, as his bloodline had no significant magical tradition.
Lord El‑Melloi II stands as a figure of quiet authority and earned respect, a former underdog who became a pivotal figure in the Clock Tower without ever becoming a combat powerhouse. His presence in Fate/strange Fake underscores the far‑reaching consequences of the Snowfield war and the lengths to which he will go to safeguard his students from the chaos he once survived.
