Description
Christine, also known as Chris, is a core member of the titular task force in the anime Lazarus. She is a woman in her mid-twenties originating from Eastern Europe, specifically Russia. This surface identity, however, conceals a deeper and more complex past. Her true name is Alexandra, and she was formerly an agent of the Russian special forces. During her time as a spy, she was involved in a mission that went drastically wrong, resulting in a fire that left her hospitalized and temporarily flatlined. With her own agency believing her to be dead, Christine seized the opportunity to escape that life entirely, undergoing a complete transformation by changing both her name and her face.

Christine presents herself as a fearless, irreverent, and straightforward individual. She is known for being frank in her interactions with others, regardless of their position, and does not concern herself with conventional gender norms or the opinions of others. On the surface, she can seem like a loose cannon with a passion for weapons and a devil-may-care attitude. However, this bold exterior masks a significant amount of internal pain and heartbreak stemming from the traumatic events of her past and the difficult choice she made to abandon her former life. Her defining motivation is the pursuit of freedom from her previous identity as a spy, which she views as a form of imprisonment.

Within the story of Lazarus, Christine is a vital member of the team assembled to find the creator of the lethal drug Hapna. Despite her sometimes reckless and independent nature, she is considered one of the group's primary combat specialists. Her expertise is frequently called upon during dangerous infiltrations and missions. Her most significant role unfolds during a personal arc where she is captured by figures from her past as Alexandra, forcing her to confront the identity she tried to leave behind and requiring the rest of Team Lazarus to rescue her.

Christine’s key relationships are central to both her personal development and the plot. Her most profound connection is with Axel, another member of the Lazarus task force. Their bond, which begins with her tricking him into joining the team, deepens over time into a close partnership built on mutual respect, support, and understanding. Axel consistently refuses to abandon her, even after learning about her history as a spy, and she in turn saves his life when he is critically injured. While their relationship is intensely close and features a kiss before a dangerous mission, it is not explicitly defined as romantic, instead appearing as a deep bond rooted in shared experience and acceptance. Christine's other crucial relationship is with Inga, her former handler and romantic partner from her days as a spy named Alexandra. When they reconnect, Inga is consumed by feelings of betrayal over having been abandoned. Their tragic reunion ends with Inga sacrificing herself to save Christine, a loss that leaves Christine devastated.

Christine’s character development is largely tied to her journey from running from her past to finally facing it. Initially secretive about her origins, her capture forces her history into the open. She initially believes she is not worth saving, but Axel’s insistence and Inga’s final words compel her to continue living her new life not just for herself, but in memory of those she has lost. She develops from a woman who changed her identity to simply survive into someone who learns to accept the bonds she has formed in her present. Her notable abilities include exceptional combat expertise, a direct result of her rigorous training as a Russian special forces agent, which allows her to efficiently take down multiple opponents even while injured. She is also an enthusiast and expert in the use of various firearms, demonstrating a high level of proficiency with them.
