Description
Clay is the central protagonist of Dungeon People, a young woman who works as a thief and is a member of a thieves' guild. Her primary motivation at the beginning of the story is to locate her adoptive father, who went missing three years prior while exploring a dungeon. She is highly skilled in combat, infiltration, and dungeon survival, having been trained from a young age by her father in a regimen that was both intense and harsh. This upbringing has made her an exceptionally competent adventurer, capable of reaching deeper floors of the dungeon than most records indicate.

Personality-wise, Clay is defined by her serious, no-nonsense demeanor, which is a direct result of her rigorous and survival-focused upbringing. She has spent her life in a state of high alert, making her a ruthless fighter but leaving her with very little ability to relax or easily understand social cues. Initially, her interactions are colored by her pragmatic and often combative mindset, but she is not unfeeling; her quest to find her father demonstrates a deep, if understated, sense of loyalty and purpose. As the story progresses, she begins to develop beyond her identity as merely a "living weapon," showing signs of learning more about friendship and having functional, non-combative relationships with others.

Clay's role in the story shifts dramatically at the outset. After a chance encounter with the dungeon's administrator, Belle, and losing a duel against her, Clay is hired as an employee to help operate the dungeon. Her role transitions from that of an explorer and treasure hunter to a member of the behind-the-scenes staff. Her duties include a wide variety of maintenance tasks, such as restocking treasure chests, setting and repairing traps, managing and interviewing monsters, and even learning how to manufacture basic undead creatures like skeletons and zombies. This new position provides her with a steady income, safety, and a unique perspective on how the dungeon functions, all while she continues her search for clues about her father.

Her most significant relationship is with Belle, the dungeon's powerful and eccentric young administrator. Their dynamic begins as a professional one of employer and employee but gradually deepens into an unexpected friendship, with Belle seemingly valuing Clay's company and Clay learning to trust Belle. She also interacts with a cast of dungeon monsters and staff, such as the goblin trio Shieldmurg, Bandeg, and Bondog, and the ghostly manager Kraitze, as well as a dwarf colleague named Rangard who manages finances and construction. These interactions often serve as a contrast to her solitary past, forcing her to navigate workplace dynamics and even inadvertently becoming a "dangerous influence" on some, like the worker golems, due to her unconventional ideas.

Throughout her time working in the dungeon, Clay undergoes noticeable development. Initially driven by a need to surpass her father and find him, she begins to learn what it means to have people in her life and to exist in a relatively safe environment. She starts to understand the dungeon not just as a place to be conquered, but as a complex, managed ecosystem. Her abilities also develop beyond her martial training; she begins training her magical detection abilities and discovers a latent, powerful magical potential within herself that she was previously unaware of. This newfound power aids her in her continued, independent exploration of the dungeon's lower floors, where she confronts powerful floor guardians like the one on the ninth level.

Clay possesses several notable abilities. As a trained thief, she is a master of stealth, cunning, and direct combat, allowing her to defeat powerful monsters such as minotaurs and cerberus-like creatures with relative ease. Her physical conditioning is exceptional, enabling her to survive and fight effectively in the dangerous environment of the dungeon. Later in the series, she develops a proficiency in magical detection and learns to harness her own inherent magical power, making her an even more formidable explorer. Her practical knowledge of dungeon maintenance, including monster management and trap placement, also becomes a key skill set.
