Description
Hakugō is a male character from the fantasy story Haigakura. He belongs to a mysterious supernatural race known as the Tenkō, and his physical form is that of a large and majestic cat. His designated role is to act as the guardian of the Moon Egg, a sacred artifact, and his presence serves as an unwavering guardian of the natural laws of the world, ensuring that the existence of the high god Emperor Jiang remains uncorrupted by any form of domination or external influence. Beyond this cosmic duty, Hakugō functions as a vital component of the realm's stability, serving directly as an aide and personal protector to the Queen Mother of the West. His position is that of a human pillar, a living sacrifice whose existence is meant to support and uphold the entire nation.
In terms of personality, Hakugō is defined by his profound silence and stoic endurance. He carries out his demanding responsibilities without complaint or outward expression of frustration, diligently performing his tasks in the background. At his core, he is presented as a being incapable of love. He does not form personal attachments or act out of emotional affection. This emotional detachment extends so far that he is described as being fundamentally indifferent, caring little about whether the nation he supports lives or perishes. His actions are not driven by personal desire but by an unyielding adherence to duty and the will of Emperor Jiang.
Hakugō's primary motivation is simply to follow the divine will that governs his existence, performing his functions as a guardian and pillar without seeking change or personal fulfillment. His most significant role in the story is his relationship with the protagonist, Ichiyō. Hakugō is Ichiyō's foster parent and guardian, having raised him from a young age. Ichiyō affectionately calls him Shiro, a nickname that reflects their close bond. However, this bond is framed as one-sided in emotion. While Hakugō stays by Ichiyō's side to protect him and acts as a mentor figure, he does so out of his duty to protect, not out of paternal love. It is understood that Hakugō is a being that fundamentally loves nothing, and his care for Ichiyō is an extension of his designated mission rather than an emotional choice. This situation is a source of deep feeling for Ichiyō, who does not find Hakugō's quiet acceptance of his fate agreeable and is driven to become a singing officer in hopes of freeing his foster parent from his sacrificial role.
Key relationships further define his character. He has an old acquaintance with the Dragon King, but he treats this person with coldness and distance, in keeping with his general disinterest in personal connections. While he supports Ichiyō's desires and understands his feelings, his own character remains static and unchanging. Hakugō does not experience a significant emotional arc or development; he remains consistent in his detached duty, only subtly showing understanding for Ichiyō's plight without altering his own nature. As a member of the Tenkō race and a divine beast, his notable abilities are tied to his supernatural lineage. He possesses immense power that allows him to effectively guard the Queen Mother of the West, protect the Moon Egg, and serve as a fundamental pillar upholding the country's very existence, wielding abilities that are god-like in their scope.
