Description
Naoshi Usui is a character from the anime My Happy Marriage. He is a middle‑aged man with dark brown hair streaked with gray and a composed, unassuming appearance that belies his true nature. Usui is the founder and leader of the Gifted Communion, a dangerous cult that seeks to overthrow the ruling order and establish equality for those with supernatural abilities. His outward calm is a mask for a deeply calculating, ruthless, and manipulative personality. He is known to use his powers solely for the purpose of harming others and holds an intense, long‑standing hatred for the Emperor.
Usui was born into the Amamizu family, a branch of the powerful Usuba clan. As a child, he was violent and unstable, prone to unprovoked cruelty toward other children and animals. His uncontrollable temper and the early awakening of his Gift—the ability to manipulate the five senses—made him a threat in the eyes of the Usuba elders, who considered sealing his powers. The only person who could calm him was Sumi Usuba, the kind and gentle daughter of the Usuba head. Sumi befriended him and helped him restrain his violent impulses, and over time their bond deepened into love. They were once considered as marriage candidates for each other.
However, the Emperor, fearing the potential of a child born from two powerful Gifted bloodlines, orchestrated the downfall of the Usuba family’s trading business and forced Sumi into a political marriage with Shinichi Saimori. Sumi sacrificed her own happiness to protect her family, and Naoshi was left heartbroken and disillusioned. This traumatic loss reignited his violent nature and drove him away from the Usuba family. Years later, he learned of Sumi’s death, which pushed him further into despair and fueled his desire for revenge against the Emperor and the system that had taken everything from him. He began to view Miyo Saimori, Sumi’s daughter, as a kind of surrogate child, referring to her as his daughter.
In the story, Usui functions as a primary antagonist. His goal is to destroy the existing imperial system and replace it with a world where Gifted individuals are free from oppression. He leads the Gifted Communion, orchestrating attacks and using his sensory‑manipulation abilities to create chaos and to control or incapacitate his enemies. His key relationships are with Sumi, whose memory drives his actions, and with Miyo, whom he sees both as a link to Sumi and as a symbol of the future he wants to build. His character undergoes a dark development from a troubled but redeemable boy to a hardened and ideologically driven villain, shaped by loss and political betrayal. His most notable ability is his Gift of sensory manipulation, which allows him to alter what his targets see, hear, feel, taste, or smell, making him a formidable and elusive opponent.
