Description
Leonhart "Leo" Saijou is a second-year Course 2 student at First High School with Germanic features: chestnut hair, green eyes, and an athletic build, standing 1.80 meters tall and weighing 75 kilograms. His father is half-Japanese; his mother is quarter-Japanese. His grandfather, Georg Ostburg, belonged to Germany’s First Type-Burg Folge (Fortress Series), magicians physically augmented via genetic remodeling. As a third-generation descendant, Leo possesses enhanced physical traits like inhuman endurance and swift reaction times. He harbors a deep fear of the mental deterioration and early death common among first-generation test subjects, managing this through impulses such as night walks emulating his grandfather’s lifestyle. His family, residing in Sōka, Saitama Prefecture, runs private welfare-rehab facilities and vigilante businesses. Historically yakuza-affiliated, they discontinued this tradition as a condition for his grandfather’s marriage into the Saijou family.

Leo exhibits an easy-going, frank, and hot-blooded personality. Courageous yet sometimes clueless, he frequently bickers with Erika Chiba, interactions others often misinterpret as romantic tension. He deeply respects his grandfather, initially using his old-generation gauntlet CAD and valuing his advice on managing genetic burdens. Leo prioritizes friendships, maintaining trust in Tatsuya Shiba despite learning of his Yotsuba lineage and military affiliations, contrasting Mikihiko Yoshida’s initial avoidance. He shows little interest in romance, focusing instead on practical matters like food or training.

His magic specialization is Fortification Magic, a branch of Convergence Magic that stabilizes molecular coordinates to harden objects or body parts. Key techniques include Panzer (general armor), Halt (immobilization), Schild (CAD-based shielding), Streitkolben (offensive limb enforcement), and Siegfried (body fortification that risks clothing damage and causes extreme hunger). Siegfried, his trump card, nullifies external forces but consumes significant physical strength. He also learned unique applications:
- Badariforging: A medical variant acting on cellular coordinates, later taught to Martial Magic Arts Club member Tookami Marika.
- Usuba Kagerō: Developed with Erika Chiba, solidifying carbon-nanotube membranes on the Chiba family’s secret sword for ultra-sharp cuts; discontinued due to legal ownership issues.

Leo’s endurance enables him to survive severe impacts like motorcycle collisions or paranormal parasite attacks. He first met Tatsuya during enrollment, becoming a trusted companion. Tatsuya selected him to test the weaponized "Mini-Communicator" CAD during the Nine Schools Competition and for the Monolith Code event due to Leo’s fortification skills. Leo later received modern knuckle-duster CADs from Rosen Magicraft, enhancing hand-to-hand combat.

During the January 2096 Visitor Arc, Leo encountered paranormal parasites ("vampires") on a late-night walk, surviving their assault through innate durability. He participated in neutralizing these threats alongside Tatsuya, Erika, and Mikihiko. Post-graduation, he attends Katsuwa Rescue University to join the Katsuwa Rescue Team. He returns to assist First High’s Martial Magic Arts Club during summer training camps, teaching Badariforging to junior members like Tookami Marika.

In March 2096, during "The Girl Who Summons the Stars," Leo vacations on Minamitate Island. He assists Tatsuya in infiltrating a research facility to rescue genetically modified magicians and engages USNA STARS unit members Ralph Algol and Ralph Hardy Mirphak in combat alongside Erika and Katsuto Juumonji.
