TV-Series
Description
Horn is a complex character whose true identity is revealed to be the original Syr, a former orphan who gave her name to the goddess Freya. In exchange for this name, she received a new identity as Horn and a unique magical ability. As a member of the Freya Familia, she serves as the goddess's chief attendant and body double, a role that deeply intertwines her existence with Freya's own.
Horn possesses long grey hair, and her most distinctive physical trait is her right eye, which changed from its original black to a silver or grey color after she received Freya's blessing and her magic, a change she considers the price for a mortal wishing to become like a god. Her overall appearance is often described as modest and witch-like, contributing to an air of secrecy that fits her position as Freya's hidden shadow.
Personality-wise, Horn is defined by an extreme, obsessive loyalty to Freya, which borders on religious fanaticism. She views herself as empty and dirty, while seeing Freya as a beautiful, warm, and divine being to be worshipped without question. This devotion is so intense that she is willing to act against Freya's own desires if she believes it will protect the goddess from corruption. Because she frequently takes Freya's place, sharing her memories and emotions, Horn has begun to adopt aspects of Freya's personality, leading to a deeply fractured sense of self.
Her core motivation stems from a desperate need to preserve Freya as a sublime, untouchable queen. She is horrified by the changes that Bell Cranel brings out in her goddess. She hates Bell for making Freya vulnerable and descending from her divine pedestal into a mere girl in love. However, the magical connection that allows her to share Freya's feelings also causes Freya's love for Bell to spill over into her, creating a powerful contradiction. As a result, Horn feels simultaneous bitterness, adoration, jealousy, and even a reluctant love for Bell, making her feelings towards him intensely conflicted.
In the story, Horn plays a pivotal role as the living mechanism that allows Freya to live a double life as the waitress Syr at the Hostess of Fertility. Whenever Freya is acting as Syr, Horn transforms and takes her place as the goddess in the tower. Her true nature and connection to Freya are the core of a major twist in the series. Her role becomes antagonistic when she attempts to assassinate Bell, believing his death is the only way to end his corrupting influence on her goddess. Later, when Freya charms the entire city of Orario to claim Bell for herself, Horn is forced to experience all of Freya's subsequent anguish and loneliness. This shared pain eventually drives her to betray Freya's orders again, not from hatred, but in an attempt to save her goddess from herself.
Her key relationships are primarily with Freya and Bell. Her bond with Freya is the foundation of her entire being, a mix of service, obsession, and shared identity. Her relationship with Bell is a maelstrom of hatred, jealousy, and unwanted affection. She also has a unique dynamic with the other members of the Freya Familia, many of whom see her not as a loyal attendant but as a dangerous fanatic. Despite her abrasive nature, she has shown moments of quiet consideration for others, such as when she prepared clean clothes and water for Ais Wallenstein during a harsh training session with Ottar.
Throughout the events of the fifth season, Horn undergoes notable development. She begins as a zealous figure determined to destroy the source of Freya's "impurity." After her plans fail and she is forced to continuously feel Freya's heartbreak, she experiences a crisis of faith. She comes to understand that Freya's love for Bell is genuine and is causing her deep suffering. In a significant turn, Horn helps facilitate Bell’s understanding of the truth and, by channeling Freya's repressed "Syr" persona, reveals Freya's true desire to be saved. This act demonstrates that her love for Freya ultimately outweighs even her own hatred and jealousy.
Horn is a Level 2 adventurer with several notable abilities granted by her falna. Her primary magic is Vana Seith, which allows her to physically transform into Freya, perfectly mimicking the goddess's appearance. A crucial side effect of this magic is that while transformed, Horn experiences Freya's senses, receives her feelings, and hears her thoughts as if they were her own. This connection also works in reverse, to a lesser degree, through her altered right eye even when not actively using the spell. She possesses two known skills: Dea Charta, which appears to be a curse transferred from her weapon, and Vanadis Schul, the effect of which is less clearly defined. She also wields a weapon known as the Rabbit-Killing Knife, which carries the Rabbit Curse skill.
