Description
Megumi Kaionji is a character from the original anime series Narenare -Cheer for You! She is a former teammate and close friend of the main protagonist, Kanata Misora. During her junior high school years, Megumi served as the captain of her cheerleading club, where she and Kanata were members of a skilled team called PoMPoMs. Her specific position within the team was as a spotter, the person whose job is to catch flyers and ensure their safety during stunts.
Megumi is a girl of short stature, standing 158cm tall, with a birthday on December 15th which makes her a Sagittarius. She is the daughter of a family that runs Shorun-ji, a Buddhist temple in the city of Numata. Her personal tastes include a preference for canelé as a favorite sweet, while she dislikes rakugan, a type of traditional Japanese confectionery. Her hobbies involve imagining new cheerleading formations and sequences, as well as watching movies.
At the start of the story, Megumi's life takes a difficult turn. A sudden illness forces her to be hospitalized, causing her to miss a major competition during her final year of junior high school. Following this event, she is in a period of convalescence, using a wheelchair while diligently undergoing rehabilitation. This physical setback is central to her character, as she continues to support her friends from home while working on her recovery.
Personality-wise, Megumi is depicted as a diligent and responsible individual who is also very caring and attentive to the needs of others. This is evident in her former role as team captain and in her continued support for her teammates. However, she also possesses a playful side and is known to enjoy teasing her close friend Kanata. Her analytical and strategic mind is a notable asset; she is skilled at devising practice menus and conceptualizing choreography, demonstrating her deep understanding of cheerleading from a technical standpoint.
A key aspect of Megumi's motivation is a promise she made with Kanata and their former teammates to win the national championship together. Despite her physical limitations and time spent on rehabilitation, she is determined to honor this commitment. To that end, she is a hard worker who does not neglect her studies, with a concrete goal of transferring to Takanosaki High School to eventually reunite with her friends in a school setting.
Megumi’s role in the narrative is that of an inspirational anchor and a strategic mind from within the group. Her bond with Kanata is especially profound, built on years of trust as her spotter. Her perspective is unique, as she remarks that seeing Kanata perform in the air makes her feel better, highlighting how their cheerleading activities serve as a source of mutual strength and healing. Throughout the series, as she progresses in her rehabilitation and studies, she demonstrates resilience and a quiet determination to overcome her circumstances, evolving from a sidelined former captain into a proactive member of the newly formed PoMPoMs team, contributing her cheerleading expertise and unwavering support even while facing personal challenges.
