Description
Kō Minamoto is a living middle school student who becomes deeply entangled with the supernatural world of the school’s Seven Mysteries. He comes from the Minamoto family, a long line of exorcists known for hunting and sealing malevolent spirits, and as a result, he has been trained from a young age to combat supernatural threats. Initially introduced as a rival to the protagonist, Nene Yashiro, and her companion Hanako-kun, Kō is determined to exorcise Hanako, believing all spirits are dangerous and that Hanako is no exception. However, his rigid worldview begins to shift as he spends more time around them.

Personality-wise, Kō is earnest, hot-headed, and impulsive, often acting before thinking things through. He has a strong sense of justice and a protective nature, especially toward those he considers innocent or in need of help. Despite his aggressive exorcist upbringing, he struggles with self-doubt, particularly regarding his worth compared to his older brother, Teru Minamoto, who is a prodigy exorcist. Kō feels he is weak or inadequate because he cannot wield the Minamoto family’s powerful techniques as skillfully as Teru. This insecurity drives him to prove himself, but also makes him more open to change and forming bonds across the human-supernatural divide.

His primary motivation evolves from fulfilling his family duty to protecting his friends and finding his own path. After several encounters with Hanako, Nene, and the supernaturals of the school, Kō becomes less focused on exorcising Hanako and more committed to helping them solve the mysteries and dangers involving other spirits. He is particularly driven to prevent harm from coming to Nene, whom he grows close to and develops romantic feelings for over time.

In the story’s events, Kō serves as a key ally to Hanako and Nene, often acting as the muscle or the one who takes direct physical action against hostile apparitions. His role bridges the human and supernatural sides, as he brings exorcist tools and knowledge while also learning to empathize with spirits rather than merely destroy them. A notable arc involves him obtaining a piece of the legendary exorcist weapon, the Raiteijou (a lightning-infused staff), which responds to his will and becomes his signature tool. Unlike his brother Teru, who views all supernaturals as threats to be eliminated, Kō learns to judge each spirit individually.

His key relationships include a complex dynamic with his older brother Teru, whom he admires and resents in equal measure; a friendship and unrequited romantic tension with Nene Yashiro; a reluctant but deepening partnership with Hanako-kun, whom he eventually comes to respect as an ally despite their differences; and a protective bond with Mitsuba Sousuke, a tragic supernatural being whom Kō repeatedly tries to save from vanishing or becoming a dangerous entity. This connection with Mitsuba is especially significant for Kō’s development, as it forces him to confront the pain of loving a spirit who cannot have a normal existence.

Over the course of the series, Kō matures from a rigid, tradition-bound exorcist into a more compassionate and self-aware individual. He accepts that strength isn’t only about power or lineage, but about choices and loyalty. His abilities include exorcist training in combat, physical agility, and use of holy or protective talismans. After gaining the Raiteijou, he can summon lightning-based attacks and use it as a melee weapon. While not as magically refined as Teru, Kō’s raw determination and willingness to put himself in harm’s way make him a formidable presence in battles against hostile supernaturals. His character arc emphasizes that one’s beliefs and allegiances can change through experience and that protecting others sometimes means understanding, not destroying, the spirits around him.
