TV-Series
Description
Gunther is a central figure in the lower city of Ehrenfest, known first and foremost as the devoted father of Myne, Tuuli, and later his son, Kamil, and the husband of Effa. A man in his late twenties to early thirties, he serves as a soldier for the city, having worked his way up from a captain at the South Gate to a gate commander, a promotion that occurs around the time his son is born. By the time of Part 3, he holds a position of significant responsibility, and he is later placed in charge of the northern gate. Physically, he has blue hair and light brown eyes, and his daughter Myne initially described him as a mean-looking, muscular individual, a testament to his strength gained through years of soldiering.
His personality is defined by his role as a family man. Gunther is an extremely doting and protective parent, a true Papa Wolf who treasures his family above all else and will not hesitate to put himself at great risk to defend them from any threat. He is fiercely loyal, and his aggressive, determined nature surfaces whenever his loved ones are endangered, even if it means confronting those of a much higher social status. Underneath his tough exterior, he can be quite childlike, known to become jealous or pouty if his daughters praise another man without acknowledging him, though he is easily placated with a bit of attention. He is also a loving and supportive parent who is simply happy to see his children find something they are good at, and he wholeheartedly backs their pursuits, a contrast to other more pragmatic families in the lower city.
Gunther's motivations are deeply rooted in a boyhood dream. As the son of woodworkers, he was inspired by minstrel tales of chivalry and dreamed of becoming a knight to protect his city. Realizing that this path was reserved for nobles, he pursued the closest possible alternative, dedicating himself to becoming a soldier. His drive to protect his family and community is the core of his identity. This romantic streak also defined his personal life; he fell in love with Effa at first sight and persistently courted her, eventually winning her over with a proposal straight out of the knight tales he loved so much, kneeling before her and offering a feystone from a slain feybeast.
Throughout the story, Gunther's role is primarily that of a guardian. He is a constant source of emotional and practical support for his family in the lower city. His position as a soldier provides a degree of security and influence, and his protective nature is a major source of conflict when external forces threaten his daughter. The narrative of Part 3 sees him dealing with the aftermath of Myne's transition into noble society, a time of great personal turmoil as he mourns the loss of the daughter he raised while knowing she is still alive but forever out of his reach in a social sense.
His key relationships are the center of his world. His bond with his wife Effa is a strong, loving, and happy marriage; he values her opinion highly and relies on her strength. With his daughters, he is overwhelmingly affectionate, though his relationship with Myne is especially poignant, shaped by the early fear that her sickly nature would lead to an early death. He supports her ambitions, even when he does not fully understand them, and is constantly surprised by her tenacity. Outside the family, he has a close friendship with Otto, a fellow soldier and a former merchant. They are drinking buddies and confidants, often discussing their troubles, though Gunther was initially jealous of the time Myne spent learning letters from Otto.
Gunther undergoes significant development, particularly in his emotional journey. He experiences a deep Heroic BSoD after having to give Myne up to be adopted into noble society at the end of Part 2, struggling with feelings of failure and loss. His wife, Effa, has to motivate him to face the future. Professionally, he experiences a rank up when an incompetent superior is demoted, leading to his own promotion to gate commander, a testament to his dedication and competence. On a more personal level, when his daughter Myne began secretly learning to read and write from Otto, his pride as a father was bruised, leading him to secretly study letters himself so as not to be outdone by his own child.
While not a noble with mana, Gunther possesses notable abilities grounded in his profession. He is a highly skilled and strong soldier, a Badass Normal whose combat prowess is proven when he takes on multiple armed men at once to protect his family. Coming from a family of woodworkers, he also has inherited skill in crafting things from wood. His competence as a soldier is what earned him his promotions, and his physical strength is a defining trait.
