Description
Brigitte is a mednoble from the rural province of Illgner who serves as a guard knight for Rozemyne, the adopted daughter of the Archduke of Ehrenfest. She is the daughter of the former Giebe Illgner and the younger sister of Helfried, who becomes the new Giebe after their father's death. Brigitte grew up roaming the fields and forests of her homeland, and the people of Illgner remember her as something of a tomboy, more at home in the woods with a knife in hand than attending etiquette courses. She chose the Knight's Course at the Royal Academy, believing that with her brother already pursuing the path of a scholar, she would be of more help to their homeland as a knight.
Brigitte has a tall and muscular build with broad shoulders, which sets her apart from the typical noblewoman's silhouette in Ehrenfest. She has dark red hair and amethyst eyes, and Rozemyne thinks she possesses a sharp and refined expression. Her personality is defined by deep loyalty to her family and her home province. This devotion leads her to take on the undesirable task of serving as Rozemyne's guard knight, a position that requires entering the temple and the lower city, both of which are looked down upon and despised by most nobles. She does this to help improve her family's influence with the Aub.
Brigitte's past is marked by a significant scandal that deeply affects her reputation and future prospects. After her father died and her brother became the new Giebe Illgner, she became engaged to a nobleman named Hassheit. Brigitte discovered that Hassheit and his family were plotting to have her brother eliminated after the wedding so they could take over Illgner. In her fury, she broke off the engagement herself, without following the proper protocols and manners expected in noble society. This action brought great shame upon her and the entire province of Illgner, allowing Hassheit and his family to relentlessly mock and harass her at every opportunity. The scandal was so severe that many nobles left Illgner, and Brigitte developed a near self-sacrificial spirit, willing to sacrifice her own happiness for the sake of her homeland. Her reputation was so damaged that she had to be escorted by her brother during her graduation ceremony because she could not find another partner.
In her role as Rozemyne's guard knight, Brigitte begins to rebuild her life. Rozemyne learns of Brigitte's circumstances and finds it unfortunate that she has little hope of marriage. To help her, Rozemyne designs a new halter-top dress specifically suited to Brigitte's well-built body type for the Starbind Ceremony, hoping she can attract a new husband. Brigitte grows closer to a fellow guard knight, Damuel, as they work together to gather ingredients for Rozemyne's jureve. At one Starbind Ceremony, Hassheit approaches Brigitte mockingly, claiming she can never hope to marry anyone else. Damuel stands up for her and proposes on the spot, promising to raise his mana to the level expected of a mednoble. While Brigitte initially interprets this as a kindhearted attempt to save her from humiliation, Damuel later insists he meant it sincerely.
Elvira, the wife of Rozemyne's adoptive father, also takes Brigitte under her wing, inviting her to exclusive tea parties which helps reduce some of the scorn other nobles direct toward her. When Rozemyne decides to establish a paper-making industry in Illgner, Brigitte is delighted, though she takes to heart Rozemyne's warning that the informal way nobles and commoners interact in her homeland could cause trouble as more outsiders visit.
Despite Damuel's promise, their engagement ultimately falls through due to differing expectations about their future. Brigitte expects to resign from service and return to Illgner after marriage, while Damuel believes they should continue serving Rozemyne in the temple. He cannot leave Rozemyne's service because he knows the truth about her past. Elvira later finds a suitable mednoble husband for Brigitte, allowing her to resign from service as planned, marry, and return to Illgner to help manage the growing paper industry there.
As a knight, Brigitte is highly competent and physically capable, comfortable in wilderness settings and skilled with a knife and in combat. She has been noted to have a strong protective instinct, especially toward Rozemyne, and shows a pragmatic and fearless attitude even in dangerous situations, such as when she battles creatures like the Tarcloche. Her loyalty and sense of duty remain her defining traits, guiding her actions from her childhood in Illgner through her service to Rozemyne and her eventual return home.
