Description
Kai Ijūin enters Tensei Academy as a first-year student, distinguished by sharp academic skills and an analytical approach. He initially declares himself a "genius among geniuses," navigating challenges through cold logic and calculation while valuing intellectual dominance above all. This perspective shifts dramatically after losing a duel to Hiro Ryūgasaki, whose relentless passion sparks Kai’s admiration and draws him into Hiro’s circle. His initially contentious dynamic with Kazuki Shindō evolves into mutual respect during the Shadow Grand Prix, where their teamwork defeats adversaries like Zuo and Ko, cementing a durable partnership.
Kai competes in Shadowverse tournaments, reaching the National Tournament only to be eliminated by Mauro Abelard in the second round. Amid the Tree of Woe crisis, he emerges as a chosen savior. Key conflicts see him overcoming a Shadow-corrupted Vanessa Justine by embracing Alice Kurobane’s encouragement and confronting Spirit Isabelle in a dreamscape. Trapped in Isabelle’s illusion of torturous experiments, he shatters her control using Chrono Witch, resolving to triumph through effort over innate talent. These ordeals solidify his newfound respect for emotional resilience alongside intellect.
Post–Tree of Woe, Kai and Kazuki prioritize academics. Three years later, they co-manage Kazuki’s family restaurant in Nekome. There, they meet Itsuki Mitsutagawa and recount their clashes with the Seven Shadows. When Shade monsters attack Nekome, Kai instantly ties the assault to the Tree of Woe’s resurgence. Heeding Hiro’s call, he and Kazuki journey to Shadowverse College to reclaim Mythical Cards, aided by Zuo and Ko against the Shades. After Wolfram Zerga’s defeat, they support Light Tenryu and later acknowledge Itsuki’s world-saving role, retaining full memory of these events when others forget.
A Runecraft specialist, Kai wields a Spellboost-centric deck, deploying spells to amplify followers or slash costs. His strategy revives fallen followers via Chrono Witch after sufficient Spellboosting. Documented wins include victories over Kazuki Shindō, Miho Yanase, Zuo and Ko (with Kazuki), a Shadow Knight, Zwei, Vanessa Justine, and Isabelle. Losses occur against Luca Yonazuki (in a flashback), Hiro Ryūgasaki, and Mauro Abelard.
