Description
Iwanbō, also known as the Round Demon, is a character who appears as a member of the Juppongatana, the elite ten-sword warrior group serving the arsonist and revolutionary Makoto Shishio. His role in the Kyoto Disturbance arc is marked by an unsettling and enigmatic presence, as he is a large, rotund individual with an unpredictable and feral mindset. He is typically silent, communicating only with an occasional, eerie laugh, which contributes to his monstrous and inhuman demeanor.

However, this initial impression is a deceptive front. Iwanbō is not a living person at all, but rather the name given to a series of intricately designed battle puppets created and remotely piloted by a master craftsman and fellow Juppongatana member named Gein. The first version of Iwanbō is a mechanical construct made from a combination of mechanical parts and human corpse materials, controlled by Gein from within its hollow body. Gein's motivation for piloting this puppet within Shishio's organization is tied to his own agenda, which later aligns with Enishi Yukishiro's plan for revenge against Himura Kenshin, known as the Jinchu (Revenge) Arc. In this sense, Iwanbō serves as a tool for Gein to gather information and test his combat creations against powerful opponents like Kenshin.

In terms of abilities, the first version of Iwanbō possesses several notable attributes. Its most prominent weapons are thin, sharp blades attached to the tips of its fingers on both hands. Furthermore, its thick, artificial skin acts as a form of armor, making it highly resistant to penetration. This is demonstrated during the battle at the Aoi-ya, where shurikens thrown by the Kyoto Oniwabanshū have no effect on the puppet. The puppet also has the ability to rotate its head a full 360 degrees, adding to its unnatural and unsettling appearance.

The character undergoes a significant development later in the series with the introduction of Iwanbō Version 3. This new model, controlled by Gein, is a far more advanced and dangerous fighting machine created specifically to combat Kenshin Himura. Unlike the first version, Version 3 possesses no bladed weapons and relies entirely on hand-to-hand combat. Its design incorporates several sophisticated mechanisms, including impact absorption to nullify strikes, unrestricted joint movement that allows its limbs to turn freely both horizontally and vertically, and an anti-piercing armor made of interlocking woven steel. The most notable feature is its ability to detach its internal framework, leaving only the elastic skin and control lines, making its arms nearly impossible to cut off. Using these mechanisms, Gein can perform techniques such as the Senwangeki, a powerful arm thrust that sends the target crashing into the ground multiple times. This final version is ultimately destroyed by Kenshin's ultimate technique, the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki. The relationships Iwanbō has are indirect, as it is a puppet; its key connection is with its creator and pilot, Gein, who serves as the true antagonist behind the construct. Its role in the story is to serve as a unique, non-human obstacle that highlights the diverse and mechanical threats present in the series' later arcs.
