Description
Chihaya Asagumo is a sixteen-year-old female student and a supporting character in the Makeine story. She is a first-year student at Tsuwabuki High School and a classmate of the protagonist, Kazuhiko Nukumizu. Prior to high school, Chihaya attended the same preparatory school or cram school as Kazuhiko and Mitsuki Ayano. During that time, she was well-known among her peers for her excellent academic performance and her attractive appearance.
In terms of personality, Chihaya presents a duality that is central to her character. On the surface, she typically behaves in a friendly, calm, and sociable manner, getting along well with her classmates. However, this gentle exterior masks a much more intense and volatile inner nature, particularly when it comes to romantic relationships. She possesses a strong tendency toward jealousy and possessiveness, which stems from a surprisingly low sense of self-esteem in matters of the heart. This insecurity can manifest as anxiety and distrust toward her partner, leading her to engage in actions that are described as obsessive or stalker-like.
Chihaya's primary motivation and role in the story are deeply tied to her relationship with Mitsuki Ayano. After entering high school, she confessed her feelings to Mitsuki, and he accepted, making her his girlfriend. This positions Chihaya as a winning heroine, one who successfully captured the affection of a desired love interest, in contrast to the series' titular losing heroines. However, her status as a winner does not bring her peace of mind. Her deep-seated fears of losing Mitsuki drive her to constantly suspect his actions. In one key narrative arc, her jealousy leads her to believe that Mitsuki may be cheating on her with her friend, the athletic Lemon Yakishio. Unable to contain her anxiety, she enlists Kazuhiko and another classmate, Anna Yanami, to help her spy on and surveil Mitsuki, dragging them into her emotionally charged and boundary-crossing schemes.
Her key relationships define much of her development and actions. Her relationship with Mitsuki Ayano is the central axis of her character, described as a "complex love relationship" where her affection is constantly at war with her possessiveness. She addresses Mitsuki formally as Mitsuki-san, which conveys a mixture of deep affection and a respectful distance. With Kazuhiko Nukumizu, she shares a history as former cram school classmates. This pre-existing connection makes him a natural, if unwilling, confidant whom she pulls into her personal crises. Her friendship with Lemon Yakishio is particularly fraught, as Lemon is a former losing heroine who had feelings for Mitsuki, making her a direct source of jealousy for Chihaya. Similarly, she involves Anna Yanami in her plans, creating a tense dynamic where others are forced to navigate Chihaya's emotional turmoil.
Chihaya possesses a few notable abilities and interests that round out her character. She is described as having a strong passion for and extensive knowledge of natural sciences, particularly in the specific fields of electronics and mineralogy. This intellectual curiosity is a point of connection she shares with Mitsuki, as they enjoy discussing these topics together. Physically, she is characterized by her short stature and a notably wide forehead, the latter being her most distinctive physical trait. In the story's visual presentation, she is often depicted with brown hair and purple eyes.
