TV-Series
Description
Chika Komari is a first-year student at Tsuwabuki High School and a member of the school's Literature Club, later becoming its vice-president. She is one of the central characters in the story, recognized as a losing heroine. Chika is of a petite build with unkempt auburn hair that she typically ties into a side pigtail on the left side of her head. Her school uniform blouse is often not tucked in and appears to be a size or two too large for her, and she is frequently seen slouching, which makes her baggy clothes look even more oversized. She is almost never seen without her smartphone clutched in her hands, which she uses as a tool for communication. Her casual clothing also tends to be baggy, such as hoodies and parkas.

Chika's personality is defined by her extreme shyness and social awkwardness, which fits the stereotype of a quiet Literature Club member. She has very little in the way of social skills and will retreat into her shell when faced with a situation that is too difficult for her to handle. Unlike other solitary characters who may enjoy being alone, Chika gets lonely easily, yet she distances herself from her peers to avoid the pain of eventual separation. She lacks self-confidence, which is most evident when she tries to speak with others, as she often stammers and struggles to form sentences. When she becomes too overwhelmed to speak, she resorts to typing messages on her smartphone to communicate with the person right in front of her. Despite this, she is comfortable around children and good at dealing with them, as she has effectively been a surrogate parent to her younger siblings at home.

Chika has a notable lack of assertiveness and admits she cannot refuse someone who is extremely persistent with her. However, she also shows significant inner strength and growth in this area. She is the only one among the initial losing heroines to openly confess her love to her initial romantic interest, risking rejection. In her interactions with Kazuhiko Nukumizu, her attitude is notably different from how she treats others. She addresses him brusquely as Nukumizu without any honorifics, often insults him, or acts mighty in front of him, reserving her sharp tongue for him alone. Despite this, she is most comfortable when he is around, often seeking him out to shield her from unwanted interactions. She also cares deeply for her friends and will go to great lengths for them, such as trying to maintain normal interactions with Koto Tsukinoki and Shintaro Tamaki even after being rejected by the latter.

Chika's primary motivation in the early story is her romantic feelings for Shintaro Tamaki, the former president of the Literature Club. She confesses to him, but her love is not returned, marking her as a losing heroine. Later in the story, after the events of Volume 3, she begins to grow more conscious of Nukumizu, becoming jealous of his interactions with other girls and making excuses to spend time with him, implying the development of new romantic feelings. Her other major motivation is her desire to preserve the Literature Club that holds her memories of her beloved senpais. She is prone to taking on great burdens alone, such as when she overworks herself to exhaustion trying to give the ideal send-off for the graduating third-years during the Tsuwabuki Festival, stubbornly refusing help until she hits her limit.

In the story, Chika is initially put up by the third-year senpais to be the succeeding Literature Club president, but she freezes up during a nervous attempt to present their club activity report to the Student Council. Kazuhiko Nukumizu saves her from further humiliation by declaring himself president in her stead, and they swap roles, with Chika becoming the vice-president. This event is a turning point for her character. Her role throughout the series often involves her being a focal point for the themes of quiet courage and personal growth, as she learns to lean on her friends and step outside of her comfort zone.

Chika's key relationships are central to her development. Her relationship with Shintaro Tamaki is defined by her unrequited love for him, as he was the person who encouraged her and gave her courage. She is close friends with Koto Tsukinoki, the former vice-president, even though Koto is her romantic rival for Tamaki's affection, demonstrating her kind and non-confrontational nature. Her relationship with Kazuhiko Nukumizu is complex and evolves significantly over time. Initially, she is rude to him and uses him as a shield, but she gradually becomes more conscious of him, shows jealousy, and starts acting like a classic tsundere toward him, often telling him to g-go die when embarrassed. At home, she is the older sister to a younger brother and sister, taking care of them while her parents work, which has made her capable at household chores and baking.

Chika undergoes considerable development throughout the series. She starts as an extremely shy girl who eats lunch alone in the school toilets but eventually regularly eats near the emergency stairs with other Literature Club members. She shows notable growth in her assertiveness, going from someone who freezes up in public to someone who can openly confess her love and stop others from bothering her friends. After her initial romantic rejection and her failure to become club president, she begins to open up more and rely on her friends rather than trying to bear all burdens alone. By later volumes, she has become a second-year student and is implied to have fallen in love for a second time, this time with Nukumizu, showing that she is capable of moving on from her first heartbreak.

Chika possesses several notable abilities despite her physical and social weaknesses. She appears to be a talented amateur novelist, as her submitted stories quickly garner likes and popularity online. She is also a good baker, often making cookies and cakes for her siblings at home, and she learned how to make handmade chocolate very quickly. She is capable at household chores due to her responsibilities at home. In Volume 7, it is revealed that she is also an excellent artist, able to draw detailed landscapes with meticulous attention to detail. Conversely, she has very little physical ability and gets exhausted quickly whenever she goes running with her athletic friend, Lemon Yakishio.
