Description
Anna Yanami is a central character known as one of the main losing heroines in her story. She is a first-year student at Tsuwabuki High School, attending class 1-C, and is a member of the school's Literature Club. As the narrative progresses into later volumes, she advances to being a second-year student in class 2-C.

Anna is the only daughter of the Yanami family and lives in Toyohashi. Her family is close with the Hakamada family, which naturally made Sosuke Hakamada her childhood friend. From a very young age, around four or five years old, she developed romantic feelings for him, a moment solidified when he made her a clover ring and promised to marry her in the future. Their close friendship continued through the years until high school, when a transfer student from England named Karen Himemiya joined their class. Sosuke fell in love with Karen, and the two began dating, leading to Anna's rejection. Despite the pain of this unrequited love, she chose to remain friends with the couple, often using the excuse of venting her frustrations to the protagonist, Kazuhiko Nukumizu, to distance herself from their public displays of affection and her parents' concerns.

In terms of appearance, Anna is a teenage girl of average height with medium-length, thick blue hair and blue eyes. She has a fair complexion and is widely considered one of the most beautiful girls in her grade, having rejected numerous confessions from boys who were captivated by her looks at the entrance ceremony. She is very fashionable, often seen wearing a variety of different outfits and hairstyles, as well as makeup and nail polish.

Anna's personality is vibrant and multifaceted. She is perhaps most notably a glutton, frequently seen eating something in almost every scene she appears in. This leads to playful bickering with Nukumizu, especially when he comments on her weight. She has a mischievous and playful nature, particularly enjoying any opportunity to tease him. However, she can also be quite petty, narrow-minded, and a sore loser. When it comes to romance, she is prone to jealousy but tries hard to conceal her true feelings, a trait exacerbated by her need to maintain appearances in front of Sosuke and Karen. She often vents her romantic frustrations to Nukumizu, which becomes a foundational element of their friendship. In later volumes, she frequently displays jealousy over Nukumizu's increasing closeness with other girls like Chika Komari and Lemon Yakishio, constantly warning him not to get a head start on her.

Despite her flaws, Anna has a kind and supportive side. She once told Sosuke to run after Karen and confess his feelings, even though she herself loved him. She has shown concern for Nukumizu, visiting the school infirmary when she heard he had heatstroke and worrying when she thought he was being confronted by someone. She occasionally provides him with emotional support and insight when he runs into problems with other girls. She also heavily supports other girls who find themselves in similar situations to her own, such as having feelings for a male childhood friend.

Anna's role in the story is primarily as the first losing heroine introduced and the most prominent one. Her initial rejection by Sosuke serves as a catalyst for her friendship with Nukumizu. After witnessing her distress in a family restaurant, Nukumizu ends up paying for her large meal, and she decides to repay him by making homemade bento boxes. This arrangement deepens their bond, and he becomes a confidant for her complaints and sorrows. He is the one who privately labels her a losing heroine. Her arc involves coming to terms with her lost love, mediating between Nukumizu and Sosuke after a misunderstanding, and eventually formally accepting Nukumizu's request to be friends.

Her key relationship is with Kazuhiko Nukumizu, whom she considers a good partner and a close friend. Their dynamic is built on bickering and mutual support. Another significant relationship is with Sosuke Hakamada, her childhood friend and first love. Despite her lingering feelings, she ultimately encourages his relationship with Karen Himemiya, who is both her best friend and her rival in love.

Anna has several notable abilities. She is a good cook, with her homemade bentos being highly praised. She is also very well-connected, able to procure the use of the Cooking Club's kitchen and find other resources through friends at different schools. While her grades are considered average within Tsuwabuki High, the school is the top academic choice in the area, making her academically proficient by general standards. She also has some odd, almost comical, abilities when it comes to eating, such as consuming an entire Pocky stick in one mouthful and having eaten strange things like flowers and dirt walls as a child.

Throughout her development, Anna begins as a girl unable to move on from her childhood love, using Nukumizu as an outlet for her pent-up frustrations. As the story progresses, she shows growth by supporting others in similar plights and becoming more openly attached to Nukumizu, even showing jealousy over his interactions with other girls. Her friendship with him becomes a source of stability and a platform for her to confront her own feelings about love and moving forward, all while maintaining her characteristic gluttony and playful pettiness.
