Description
Isaburō Ebisu is a character from the anime and manga series A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!. He serves as the teacher's assistant for Class 2-3 at Hyakki Academy, the youkai school where the story takes place. In terms of his background, Ebisu is not a youkai but a god; he is a member of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese fortune. His age is considerable, being over one hundred years old, though he maintains the appearance of a young man in his early twenties. Physically, he has long, dark brown hair that is typically tied back into a braid reaching down to his back, and his eyes are red with blue irises. He usually wears a white striped button-up shirt with dark pants and is often seen with a smile on his face, a trait that many of the female students find handsome.
On the surface, Ebisu presents himself as a kind, caring, and helpful individual. He initially gets along well with the protagonist, Haruaki Abe, and offers assistance when needed. However, this pleasant demeanor is largely a facade. Beneath his polite smile, Ebisu harbors a strong and genuine disdain for youkai. He abhors the fact that his younger brother, Mikoto Sano, attends Hyakki Academy and has taken the teaching position largely as a way to monitor him, with the ultimate goal of finding a reason to pull his brother out of the school and sever his ties with the youkai world. Furthermore, it is suggested that his bitterness extends beyond just youkai, as Sano implies that Ebisu no longer cares for humans either.
The primary motivation driving Ebisu's actions is his complex relationship with his brother, Sano. Although he has not seen Sano in three years and the two do not share a last name, Ebisu is deeply invested in controlling his brother's environment. Despite his cold exterior and Sano's open dislike for him, Ebisu privately admits to finding his brother endearing, hinting at an underlying brother complex. His role in the story is largely defined by this conflict. As a new faculty member, his presence causes tension, particularly because Sano sees through his false kindness. Ebisu's relationships with other staff members are also marked by suspicion. The oni teacher Miki Rintarou is immediately wary of him and does not trust his reasons for being at the school. Their interactions are a mix of veiled hostility and mutual mockery, with Ebisu using his knowledge of Miki's loss of power to antagonize him, though they eventually form an uneasy truce based on their shared desire to protect someone at the academy. His relationship with Haruaki becomes more turbulent after Ebisu sees Haruaki recklessly risk his life to save a youkai child, and Ebisu seems to enjoy stealing the spotlight from the main teacher and his students.
In terms of notable abilities, Ebisu possesses an innate aura of good luck that affects those around him. This ability manifests in remarkable ways, such as traffic lights turning green for him, drivers not asking prying questions, and performing physically improbable feats like landing precisely on the front of a moving train. Crucially, Ebisu appears to have control over this power, able to turn it on and off at will, as demonstrated when he refrained from using it to prevent someone from succeeding at a game. Apart from his supernatural fortune, he is also a very picky eater, avoiding meats, fried foods, sweets, bell peppers, and tomatoes, often passing these foods to a colleague during meals. He also has a verbal tic of drawing out his vowels, especially when excited. Over the course of the story, Ebisu shows little development in his core prejudices, remaining a complex figure whose pleasant exterior masks a deeply rooted hatred for the youkai world his brother inhabits.
