TV-Series
Description
Amaaki Abe is the twenty-five-year-old identical twin brother of Haruaki Abe, the protagonist of the series, and is the older of the two by one day. Born on February 20, he stands 187cm tall and has a blood type of A. Amaaki works as a Shinto priest at his family’s shrine in Osaka, serving alongside his father. The Abe family shrine is described as a normal one without any particularly powerful enshrined deities.

In terms of personality, Amaaki presents a strong and confident exterior that contrasts sharply with his brother’s more timid nature. He is outgoing, sociable, and makes friends easily, being described as very popular and even more so than his twin. When first meeting Haruaki’s students, they note that Amaaki appears much cooler and handles social situations with a level-headed and calm demeanor. However, this composed facade belies a deep-seated fear and disdain for supernatural creatures, particularly demons and oni. This fear stems from a traumatic childhood incident when Amaaki was five years old and was attacked by a monster; his brother Haruaki saved his life during that moment. Consequently, Amaaki feels very uneasy around non-humanoid youkai and becomes visibly scared in their presence.

Amaaki’s primary motivation is the protection of his younger twin brother, Haruaki. This protective instinct has evolved into what is often described as a brother complex, with Amaaki being obsessed with keeping Haruaki safe from harm. He considers it his duty as the older twin to shield Haruaki, whom he perceives as weak and needing constant safeguarding. Despite his personal terror of monsters, Amaaki once overcame his fear to go undercover at Hyakki Academy, the monster school where Haruaki teaches, by pretending to be his brother in order to check on the situation. This act demonstrates his willingness to face his own phobias for the sake of his family. He initially attempted to drag Haruaki away from the school, but over time, he has come to respect his brother’s choices and trust him to remain at the academy.

Regarding his role in the story, Amaaki serves as a foil to his brother Haruaki. While Haruaki possesses strong spiritual powers and is fearless when it comes to the supernatural, Amaaki is an ordinary human with no such exorcism abilities and is terrified of youkai. He makes his first appearance in the second volume of the manga, when Haruaki’s students mistake him for their teacher. His presence often creates comedic situations due to his fear of the students, but he also provides crucial emotional support and a connection to Haruaki’s human life outside the academy.

Amaaki’s key relationships are central to his character. His bond with his twin brother Haruaki is the most significant; they share a unique closeness, having done everything together since childhood, including getting their hair cut until Haruaki left for school. They call each other by nicknames, with Amaaki being Rain and Haruaki being Sun. Amaaki deeply loves and admires his brother, and when Haruaki went away to the academy, Amaaki tried to act like him in the mirror, only to find it disappointing without his twin there. Among the students of Hyakki Academy, Amaaki gets along best with Mikoto Sano, likely because Sano appears very humanlike, which does not trigger his fear. They both care for Haruaki but have differing views on his capabilities, with Amaaki seeing him as weak and Sano seeing him as strong but lacking confidence. Conversely, Amaaki has a contentious relationship with Izuna Hatanaka, whom he initially disliked due to Hatanaka’s past as a delinquent. The two frequently use each other’s fears against one another, with Hatanaka finding Amaaki irritating and Amaaki finding Hatanaka inconsiderate.

In terms of development, Amaaki’s character arc revolves around learning to let go of his overprotectiveness. Although he remains fearful of youkai and concerned for his brother’s safety, he gradually learns to trust Haruaki’s judgment and ability to navigate the supernatural world. He takes pride in the fact that he respects Haruaki’s decisions and allows him to continue his career as a teacher at a school for monsters, even if he does not fully approve. His notable abilities are few, as he is essentially a regular human with no spiritual powers. However, he is said to have a sixth sense for detecting delinquents and bullies, which he uses to keep Haruaki safe. He is also known to be bad with alcohol.
