TV-Series
Description
Mikoto Sano is a seventeen-year-old student in Class 2-3 at Hyakki Academy, the setting of A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!. He is a yakubyougami, a god of pestilence who naturally brings misfortune and illness to those around him. His original name and precise origins are unknown, but he was banished from the High Heavens after causing problems in a school for gods. He transferred first to a youkai middle school and later to Hyakki Academy, where he uses the alias Mikoto Sano. As a child, he was deeply attached to a tanuki plushie; he once gave a good luck charm to a teenage Haruaki Abe after the boy helped him retrieve it. His past is not widely known, but it is implied that his expulsion from the divine school was caused by an incident similar to his accidental breaking of Haruaki's soul, and that his behavior was markedly different when he first arrived at Hyakki Academy.
In personality, Mikoto presents a cool, laid-back, and nonchalant exterior. He often maintains an aloof demeanor even in tense situations, but he has a short temper that flares especially in response to Haruaki's cowardice or clumsiness. He possesses a sadistic streak and derives a certain amusement from the misfortune of others, a trait attributed to his nature as a plague god. He is generally blunt about his disinterest, refusing outright to participate in activities he does not care for. Despite this, he shows a gentle and loyal heart toward his close friends, and his protective side emerges when those he cares about are threatened. He is neat and tidy, has a strong aversion to bugs, and cannot sing well, often skipping music class. When he is not responsible for looking after others, his relaxed and somewhat clueless side can surface. His core motivations revolve around finding a place of belonging despite his exile; he values the connections he builds and gradually learns to accept himself and be accepted by those around him.
Within the story, Mikoto functions as a secondary protagonist. He is one of the most prominent students in Haruaki's class and a frequent source of both accidental chaos and genuine assistance. His nature as a yakubyougami means that any physical contact with him can cause people's clothes to tear or trigger other unlucky events, and his powers often backfire in comedic ways. Nevertheless, he becomes a crucial ally to Haruaki, and his actions drive several key arcs, such as the Kyoto arc in which he accidentally shatters Haruaki's soul and then works to repair the damage.
Mikoto's relationships are central to his development. His bond with Haruaki evolves from mutual irritation into a deep friendship; during their summer vacation, Mikoto confides that he is a god rather than a youkai, and Haruaki's unconditional acceptance of that fact resonates strongly with him. Later, when Haruaki doubts his own ability as a teacher, Mikoto echoes those same words back to support him. His closest friend is Mamekichi Maizuka, a small youkai; Mikoto is unusually kind and protective toward him, often showing physical affection such as hugging him. He is also part of a friend group that includes Koutarou Hijita and Beniko Zashiki, and he shares a mutual understanding with Rensuke Nyuudou. His older brother, Isaburou Ebisu, has a strained relationship with him; Ebisu tries to remove Mikoto from the youkai environment, which Mikoto finds overbearing and upsetting. With Oota Yagorou, Mikoto has a friendly rapport, often resting on his head during fitness tests.
Over the course of the series, Mikoto undergoes noticeable character development. He gradually becomes less closed-off and more amiable, though his teasing and mildly sadistic tendencies remain part of his personality. His willingness to take responsibility for his actions, such as the soul-breaking incident, demonstrates growing maturity. The acceptance he receives from Haruaki and his classmates helps him move past his exile and embrace his identity, even as he struggles with the uncontrollable aspects of his powers.
As a yakubyougami, Mikoto's primary ability is to generate misfortune and illness. This power is often involuntary, manifesting as torn clothes, bad luck, or other chaotic effects upon physical contact. However, he can sometimes channel it intentionally: he once summoned a thunderstorm to punish classmates who destroyed a tanuki sand sculpture, and in another instance caused a dog to chase Haruaki. Alongside these supernatural talents, he excels in academics and sports, standing out as both handsome and capable. His name, meaning "life," forms an ironic contrast with his role as a bringer of pestilence.
