TV Special
Description
Gran Torino is a retired professional hero whose real name is Sorahiko Torino. He is exceptionally short in his old age, standing at only 120 centimeters, but was once a tall and powerfully built man in his prime. He has short gray hair and a matching beard, and wears a distinctive hero costume consisting of a yellowish cape, a dark full-body suit, and thick boots with holes in the soles. Born on January 28, his blood type is B, and he has a noted fondness for taiyaki and sleeping in.

Personality wise, Gran Torino initially comes across as a senile old man with a poor memory, often forgetting who he is speaking to and asking the same questions repeatedly. This behavior, however, is largely a facade used to test the reactions and character of those around him. Beneath this forgetful exterior lies a person of sharp intelligence and keen perception. As a mentor, he is incredibly strict, demanding, and even brutal. His training methods are famously harsh, having left the number one hero, All Might, with a deep and lasting fear of him. He does not hesitate to shout, scold, or physically correct his students when they make mistakes, but he is equally quick to offer genuine praise when it is earned.

His motivations are rooted in a sense of duty to his past and to the legacy of his friend, Nana Shimura, the seventh wielder of the One For All Quirk. By his own admission, he has never been interested in typical hero activities or fame. He obtained his hero license primarily to gain the freedom to use his Quirk for his own purposes, which was largely to assist Nana Shimura in her battle against the series' primary antagonist. After Nana's death, his focus shifted to training her successor, Toshinori Yagi, who would become All Might, to ensure he could carry on the fight.

Gran Torino plays a crucial role as a mentor for two generations. He served as a teacher at U.A. High School for only one year, during which he was the homeroom instructor for a young All Might. He is one of the very few people who know the secret of One For All. Years later, he directly intervenes in the development of All Might’s successor, Izuku Midoriya, by personally requesting him for a hero work-study. During this time, he helps Izuku break his rigid mindset and teaches him how to use One For All in a more fluid and efficient manner, a turning point in the young hero's growth. Beyond his role as a teacher, he remains active in the fight against villain organizations, using his experience and abilities to support other heroes and assist law enforcement.

In terms of key relationships, his connection to All Might is central. While the hero lives in awe and terror of his former teacher, Gran Torino continues to advise and reprimand him as a peer and a friend, often calling Toshinori by his first name. His relationship with Izuku Midoriya is more nurturing, though no less demanding, and he serves as a vital bridge between the two bearers of One For All. His most foundational relationship is his friendship and alliance with Nana Shimura, a bond that set the course for his entire career as a hero and mentor.

Gran Torino's notable abilities center on his Quirk, Jet. This power allows him to propel himself by expelling air from the bottoms of his feet, enabling astonishingly fast high-speed movement, mid-air dashes, and the ability to hover or fly for short distances. His fighting style relies heavily on this incredible speed and unpredictability to confuse opponents and strike at their weak points. A physical blow from his high-speed attacks is powerful enough to crack asphalt. However, the Quirk relies on the user's breathing, and in his old age, using it continuously puts a significant strain on his body. Despite this limitation and his small stature, Gran Torino remains an exceptionally powerful and skilled combatant, capable of defeating multiple villains and holding his own in major conflicts alongside top heroes. His true strength, however, lies in his wisdom and his unparalleled ability as an instructor to analyze a person's abilities and push them to their next level of development.
