Description
The Angel Devil is a unique devil who works for Public Safety's Special Division 4, making his first appearance during the events of the Reze Arc. Unlike most devils who are inherently hostile to humans, the Angel Devil displays a notable lack of aggression towards them, which makes him an anomaly among his kind. His visual design is distinct and androgynous, resembling a beautiful young male with long red hair, a golden halo floating above his head, and a pair of large white-feathered wings sprouting from his upper back. This angelic appearance is deliberately ironic, as his very nature as a devil stands in stark contrast to his heavenly features, drawing visual inspiration from classical depictions of the fallen angel Lucifer.

In terms of personality, the Angel Devil is defined by a profound laziness and a deep-seated aversion to combat and work. He frequently declares that he would rather die than be forced to work and has a nihilistic outlook, claiming to have always been prepared for the moment of his death. He considers himself a devil first and an angel second, often stating that humans should die in pain, which initially leads his partner Aki Hayakawa to believe he has a typical devil's disregard for human life. However, this cold exterior masks a more complex and conflicted inner self. He suffers from nightmares in which the humans whose lifespans his power has stolen appear to blame him, which causes him significant psychological distress and makes him reluctant to use his abilities. Despite his claims of indifference, he shows moments of genuine compassion, such as comforting dying humans and expressing a desire to protect his partner from harm.

The Angel Devil's motivations evolve throughout the Reze Arc. Initially, he seems to possess a passive death wish, seemingly eager to die simply to escape the burdens of work and his traumatic powers. However, through his forced partnership with Aki, a deeply moralistic devil hunter who is willing to sacrifice his own lifespan to save him, Angel begins to reject this notion. He develops a desire for a normal, peaceful life, going so far as to wish that Aki would quit his dangerous job to live a long and quiet existence. This change suggests that exposure to compassionate humans is slowly fostering in him an affection for humanity that he claims is a result of his angelic aspect.

Within the story of the Reze Arc, the Angel Devil serves as a reluctant but powerful asset for Public Safety. He is assigned as a partner to Aki Hayakawa, much to Aki's initial displeasure, as Aki struggles to trust a devil. Their relationship is central to his role, as the two begin as unwilling allies who openly clash over their differing values, but gradually develop a grudging respect and care for one another. During the climactic battle against the Bomb Devil, Reze, the Angel Devil provides crucial support. After Reze wreaks havoc across the city, it is the Angel Devil who ultimately delivers the fatal blow, impaling her with a spear on Makima's orders as she attempts to return to Denji. His role shifts from a lazy observer to a key executioner, demonstrating his lethal efficiency when the situation demands it.

The Angel Devil's character development is most significantly tied to his relationship with Aki and the gradual unveiling of his tragic past. He is initially socially withdrawn and isolated, a consequence of his power that makes physical contact with him lethal to humans. Aki is the first human who is not afraid to touch him, and this connection begins to break down his emotional walls. Later information reveals that his amnesia and lethargy are the result of psychological manipulation by Makima, who forced him to slaughter an entire village of humans who had befriended him, only to erase his memories of the event. This revelation casts his personality in a new light, framing his laziness and desire for death as symptoms of a deep, repressed trauma and self-hatred rather than simple apathy.

The Angel Devil possesses several notable and dangerous abilities that make him one of the most powerful members of Division 4, second only to Captain Kishibe according to Makima. His primary power is the involuntary absorption of human lifespan through direct skin-to-skin contact; even a brief touch can shorten a person's life by months, and prolonged contact results in a painless death. He can store this absorbed lifespan within his body and later convert it into powerful physical weapons, which he summons from his halo. These weapons have unique properties, such as the ability to cut intangible ghosts, and their strength increases dramatically with the amount of lifespan expended, from a five-year sword to a devastating one-thousand-year spear. His angelic wings are also incredibly durable, strong enough to block bullets and serve as shields, though doing so is still painful. Despite this immense power, his psychological trauma and inherent laziness prevent him from using his abilities to their full potential unless he is directly controlled or forced into a corner.
