Description
Beam is a Shark Fiend, a type of devil that has taken over a human corpse to survive in the world. He works as a devil hunter for Public Safety, serving as a member of Special Division 4. His appearance is striking and inhuman, combining a muscular, young male body with the distinct features of a shark. The top half of his head is replaced by a shark's snout and a dorsal fin, leaving him with no visible eyes. He has short, spiky black hair and very sharp teeth, and he almost always wears only a pair of swimming trunks, regardless of the situation.
Beam's personality is highly eccentric, energetic, and marked by a kind of naive innocence. He is driven above all else by an intense, almost religious devotion to the Chainsaw Devil, which he associates with Denji. He constantly refers to Denji as "Lord Chainsaw" and shows him an unwavering level of respect and enthusiasm. This devotion makes him incredibly loyal and willing to follow any order Denji gives, no matter how reckless or bizarre. Outside of his devotion to Denji, Beam has a savage and violent side, taking great joy in combat and thoughtlessly devouring his enemies, such as packs of zombies. Despite his ferocity in battle, he is also submissive and obedient to Makima, never defying her commands. When faced with a terrifying opponent like the Bomb Devil, he initially shows fear and attempts to flee, but when cornered, his instinct to fight back takes over without hesitation.
Beam's primary motivation is the protection and service of the Chainsaw Devil. His entire existence as a character revolves around this singular goal. He volunteers to be Denji's partner, follows him everywhere, and repeatedly risks his own life to save him. He is not driven by personal ambition or human desires, but by a primal reverence for Denji's devil form.
In the Reze Arc, Beam plays a crucial role as Denji's temporary partner and protector. After Power is sidelined, Beam is assigned to work with Denji at his own enthusiastic request. He follows Denji by "swimming" through the ground and stays hidden to avoid causing a scene. His most significant intervention occurs when he detects that Reze, Denji's love interest, is actually the Bomb Devil by her scent. He saves Denji from her initial attack and attempts to fight her, but is quickly overwhelmed by her explosive power. Later, after Denji is defeated by Reze, Beam helps revive him by offering his own blood. He then reveals that in the past, the Chainsaw Devil used his chains to navigate, providing a strategy for the final battle. Following Denji's command, Beam transforms into his full devil form, a giant, multi-limbed shark creature. Denji mounts him, using his chainsaw chains as reins, and together they launch a devastating counterattack against Reze and her ally, the Typhoon Devil. Beam's incredible mobility and size allow Denji to charge into the Typhoon Devil's vortex and destroy it. In a final act of protection, Beam puts Denji in his mouth to shield him from a direct attack, taking the brunt of the damage himself and becoming incapacitated.
