Description
Fumihiko Takaba is a thirty-five-year-old man who enters the Culling Game as a newly awakened sorcerer. Before his involvement in the deadly game, Takaba was a failing stand-up comedian struggling to find an audience for his act. He is a tall individual with slicked-back dark hair, long sideburns that reach past his nose, thick eyebrows, and small, light-colored pupils. As a participant in the Culling Game, he abandons his business suit for a distinctive, skin-tight costume based on the first superhero that ever made him laugh. The uniform is split down the middle, with a dark left side featuring light stripes and a right side that is completely missing, exposing his bare chest and leg. The outfit is adorned with smiley faces on the collar and belt, and half of a smiling heart on the chest area.

Takaba possesses an exceptionally goofy and energetic personality, living his life with the singular purpose of entertaining others. His defining trait is that despite his dedication to comedy, his jokes consistently fail to land, and he often finds himself as the only person who thinks he is funny. This quality contributed to his failure as a professional comedian, yet he remains outspoken and comedy-focused in every situation, no matter how serious or dangerous. He is completely unfazed by the violence of the Culling Game, approaching life-or-death battles as if they were part of his act. His behavior can be irritating to allies and enemies alike, as he persists in telling jokes and performing physical gags even when faced with lethal threats. Despite his eccentricities, Takaba operates on a personal moral code, refusing to kill anyone and stepping in to protect others when he perceives an unfair fight. He once helped Megumi Fushiguro simply because he saw him being attacked two-on-one and considered his assailants cowards. He claims to judge a person's character by their face, though he admitted that Megumi had a bad face but chose to help him anyway, dismissing beauty as revisionist.

Takaba's primary motivation stems from a deep-seated desire for connection and recognition. He originally pursued comedy because he wanted people to understand him better, believing that if others truly knew him, he would no longer feel lonely. However, years of failure led him to live in denial, using the encouragement of a senior comedian as an excuse to stop taking his craft seriously. He began to distance himself from those who did not laugh at his jokes, cutting off the people who failed to validate his sense of humor. His journey throughout the Culling Game forces him to confront this hypocrisy and ultimately remember his true reason for becoming a comedian, leading to a renewed determination to make others laugh, including his enemies.

In the story, Takaba first appears in the Tokyo No. 1 Colony when he intervenes in a fight between Megumi Fushiguro and two other Culling Game players, Reggie Star and Iori Hazenoki. He quickly proves to be a powerful and unpredictable ally, taking an explosive attack meant for Megumi and engaging Hazenoki in a bizarre one-sided battle. Throughout the fight, he frustrates his opponent with relentless jokes and seemingly impossible resilience, deflecting explosives with a paper fan and using pranks like kanchō (a shoulder-poke prank) alongside devastating physical attacks. After this encounter, he joins forces with Yuji Itadori and the others, agreeing to let them use his collected points for their objectives. Later, Angel suggests that Takaba be sent to confront Kenjaku, the mastermind behind the Culling Game, a role he accepts. This confrontation becomes the most significant fight of his life, as Kenjaku's vast knowledge of jujutsu proves useless against the abstract nature of Takaba's power, forcing the ancient sorcerer to engage in a philosophical debate about comedy itself.

Takaba's key relationships include his brief but impactful alliance with Megumi Fushiguro, who was initially bewildered by him but ultimately expressed relief that Takaba was not an enemy. He also forms a bond with the main group of jujutsu sorcerers, who come to rely on his unique abilities. His most significant relationship develops with his adversary, Kenjaku. During their fight, Kenjaku inadvertently becomes the one person who both understands and challenges Takaba's comedy on a technical level, leading Takaba to a crucial moment of self-realization. In a surprising turn, their battle ends not in hatred but in a strange, mutual respect, with Kenjaku admitting that the comedian had genuinely made him laugh.

The most notable development for Fumihiko Takaba is his personal and emotional journey from a comedian in denial to one who fully accepts his purpose. He begins as a character who uses lies and deflection to protect himself from the pain of his failure, believing he does not care if anyone understands his humor. A key turning point occurs during his fight with Kenjaku when he sees the corpse of his former adversary, Iori Hazenoki. This moment shatters his denial, forcing him to recall a past conflict with a college comedy partner who he accused of not taking comedy seriously. He realizes the irony of his own behavior and finally remembers that his true desire was for people to know him. He apologizes to Kenjaku, admitting his lie about not caring whether his jokes were understood, and stands back up with the genuine goal of making his opponent laugh.

Takaba's abilities are among the most unusual and powerful in the series. His innate cursed technique is called Comedian, an ability that can alter reality itself by manifesting any situation that Takaba genuinely believes will be funny. The technique has the potential to rival even the power of Satoru Gojo, but its effectiveness is entirely dependent on Takaba's own confidence and conviction in his humor. If he has even a shred of doubt that something will be amusing, the technique will fail. Crucially, Takaba is completely unaware that he possesses this cursed technique, and his ignorance is ironically a key component of its strength. In battle, Comedian manifests as a form of gag logic, allowing Takaba to survive devastating explosions and injuries with only minor, temporary damage, or for his opponents' attacks to simply be treated as if they never worked in the first place because that outcome would be less interesting or humorous. His physical fighting style is unpredictable and effective, capable of moving faster than experienced sorcerers can react and delivering powerful blows like dropkicks and roundhouse kicks. The technique can also affect his opponents, forcing them into comedic scenarios or causing their attacks to fail in absurd ways. According to Kenjaku, the power of Comedian is so abstract that it could potentially render a thousand years of jujutsu knowledge useless, making it one of the most formidable and disorienting abilities in the world of jujutsu sorcery.
