Description
Broughston Ashorc, known by the alias the Wise Demon or the Sage Beast, is an orc and a pivotal figure in the adventuring world as the leader of the legendary S-ranked party, the Orichalcum Fist. He is a unique entity among his kind, distinguished by his grey skin and an intellect and set of abilities that far exceed what any ordinary orc is supposed to possess. This exceptional nature made him a solitary figure within his own herd, where even his father and brothers worshipped him as a deity rather than treating him as an equal. After a natural disaster annihilated his entire herd, Broughston entered human society and became an adventurer, eventually founding the Orichalcum Fist.
In terms of personality, Broughston embodies a stark contradiction of gentle wisdom and extreme, almost brutal, intensity. He is deeply intelligent and introspective, but this is paired with a characteristically orcish craving for communication through physical combat. He has long sought an opponent who could match him blow for blow, as anyone who takes a punch from him is typically incapacitated with a single hit. This deep-seated desire for a worthy rival directly fuels his primary motivation in the story: to train and cultivate an opponent strong enough to stand against him. His training methods are infamously Spartan, operating on the belief that if a trainee dies during the process, they can simply be revived and made to continue. This approach is not born of malice but from his unique perspective as a being who can reverse death itself.
Broughston's role in the narrative is that of a mentor and an overwhelming force of nature. He is one of the primary trainers of the protagonist, Rick Gladiator, having designed Rick's brutal training regimen specifically to forge him into a rival capable of exchanging blows with Broughston on equal terms. The relationship between Broughston and Rick is complex, built on a foundation of extreme physical trials but also genuine respect. As the leader of the Orichalcum Fist, he provides strategic guidance and raw power, and his party members are the key figures who honed Rick's abilities to superhuman levels. An immortal adventurer once called him the Lonely Orc, a title that underscores his fundamental isolation, and it was this figure who helped Broughston form the Orichalcum Fist as a means of finding friends strong enough to keep pace with him.
Broughston undergoes significant development as his long-held wish begins to be fulfilled. When Rick finally agrees to a serious match, Broughston reveals his past and his motivations, showing a vulnerable side beneath his monstrous exterior. His fighting style is direct and unyielding; he typically takes an opponent's initial attack head-on with his body before launching a devastating counterattack. He possesses a unique tradition for acknowledging a true warrior: he gives a quarter thumbs-up, a thumbs-up angled at forty-five degrees, which signifies his recognition before he charges in and unleashes his full strength.
Broughston's notable abilities are what truly set him apart. He possesses immense physical strength and durability befitting a monstrous orc, but this is complemented by mastery over advanced support magic, including spells for healing and even resurrection. This combination of brute force and clerical magic allows him to act as a warrior-monk, making him an exceptionally versatile and nearly unstoppable combatant who can both endure tremendous punishment and reverse the consequences of battle for his allies.
