Description
Kuta is a supporting character in Tonbo!, an elderly man in his seventies who resides on Akuareki Island. He is a former golf course designer, and his most notable work is the makeshift course on Hinoshima Island where the protagonist Tonbo first learned to play. Having once been a professional course architect, he brings a wealth of technical knowledge and an artist’s eye for the natural terrain.

Living in quiet seclusion, Kuta maintains a deep connection to the land and the game. He has created a special one-hole course hidden in a forest by a small lake on his own island, a layout that reflects his philosophy: a hole should be both beautiful and monstrously challenging, testing every facet of a golfer’s skill. His personality is a blend of warm hospitality and uncompromising standards. When Tonbo and Igarashi visit him, he welcomes them graciously but immediately puts Tonbo’s abilities to the test. He is not hostile, but he is direct, telling her that her self-taught, 3-iron-only style will not survive in competitive golf. This bluntness masks a genuine desire to see whether her raw talent can be shaped into something lasting.

Kuta’s role in the story is that of a catalyst and a gatekeeper. He forces Tonbo to confront the limitations of her island-grown game by confronting her with a practice green so difficult that it takes her an entire day to begin to master it. Through this ordeal, Tonbo gains a new respect for the precision and adaptability that tournament golf demands, and she starts to appreciate the efforts of both Igarashi and Kuta to prepare her for the larger world. Kuta’s key relationships are with Igarashi, whom he treats as a peer with a shared passion for the sport, and with Tonbo, to whom he becomes an exacting but caring mentor figure during their time together. His motivations are rooted in preserving the integrity of course design and honoring the game’s challenges. He wants Tonbo to understand that true golf is not just about hitting amazing shots but about reading the land, managing difficult lies, and growing beyond comfortable habits.

Though his screen time is limited, Kuta leaves a lasting impression. He embodies the wisdom of a craftsman who has spent a lifetime thinking about how a hole should play, and his intervention helps push Tonbo toward the decision to leave the island and test herself in formal competition. His notable ability lies in his course design expertise, blending strategic difficulty with natural beauty, and in his sharp eye for the gaps between raw flair and competitive readiness.
