TV-Series
Description
Mei Takanashi, also known by her online alias Kim Anouk, is a main character in the anime. She is a high school student attending a prestigious conservatory affiliated with a music university, having started her musical education at a very young age and won numerous awards for her exceptional talent on the piano. She is of mixed German heritage, a detail that unfortunately made her a target for bullying and discrimination from her classmates during her childhood, contributing to a reserved demeanor and a tendency to keep her distance from others.

Despite her cool and composed exterior, Mei possesses a deeply passionate and almost obsessive personality. This is most evident in her devotion to Kano Yamanouchi, whom Mei first came to know as Nonoka Tachibana, an idol in the group Sunflower Dolls. Mei was a dedicated fan of Nonoka, following her activities with intense fervor. When the idol retired after a public scandal, Mei felt adrift and hollow, having lost a source of inspiration and emotional connection that had been a cornerstone of her life. This devotion manifests in somewhat uncomfortable ways, such as collecting a vast amount of merchandise, sniffing an item of Kano’s clothing, and even stalking her to her workplace. Her enthusiasm is frequently punctuated by a distinct, quirky laugh, and she is prone to bouts of jealousy, particularly when Kano spends time with their mutual friend, Kiui Watase. A sensitive person with strong opinions about artistic interpretation, Mei has a history of using a pseudonym, Kimura, to hide her foreign name and mask her own insecurities.

Mei’s primary motivation stems from her desire to repay the kindness and inspiration Kano gave her as an idol. When she first encounters Kano again after her retirement, Mei is conflicted; she is disappointed that Kano is no longer the polished, perfect image of Nonoka and initially tries to convince her to return to being that persona. However, her deeper motivation is to help the person who once saved her, even if her approach is misguided. This evolves from wanting to resurrect an idol to supporting the real Kano as a person and artist. Within the story, Mei serves as the musical composer for the anonymous creative collective JELEE, founded by Kano and the artist Mahiru Kozaki (Yoru Kurage). She is the financial backbone of the group as well, offering to bankroll their activities. Crucially, Mei occupies a unique position among the characters as the only one who has known and loved both the public idol Nonoka and the private, more vulnerable Kano, making her a vital bridge between Kano’s past and present.

Her key relationships are centered on the other members of JELEE. Her bond with Kano is the most complex, beginning as a parasocial fan-idol relationship and slowly developing into a genuine friendship and artistic partnership based on mutual respect. She has a more grounded and supportive dynamic with Mahiru, with whom she shares a more traditional academic path, and the two often bond over their common admiration for Kano and their own artistic aspirations. Mei is a talented and trained classical pianist and a skilled composer, which are her greatest assets to JELEE, as she is responsible for writing their original songs. Despite her high-level musical education and compositional ability, Mei has a notable lack of technical knowledge regarding digital music production, a gap that her friend Kiui helps her to fill. She also has a paradoxical weakness in her own vocal ability, often singing poorly off-key, a trait that nonetheless proves valuable in a pivotal moment of sincere emotional expression.

Mei undergoes significant development throughout the story. Initially introduced as a problematic fan who cannot separate the idol from the real person, she learns to accept and appreciate Kano for who she truly is, not the flawless image she projected. In a crucial moment of crisis when Kano spirals into self-doubt and isolates herself, it is Mei who acts as the catalyst to bring her back. She performs a raw, cringe-inducingly sincere song that is less about technical perfection and more about pure, unfiltered emotion, breaking through Kano's walls and reminding her of their genuine connection. This act solidifies her growth from an obsessive fan into a true, supportive friend and collaborator. As the series progresses, she also gains clarity on her future, deciding to continue her musical training at a university and developing a healthier, more mature passion for her art that is independent of her feelings for Kano.
